Interview with April Kry

We’ve featured April Kry on Belles and Gals a number of times on Belles and Gals since we started just over a year ago, an artist we consider one of the true rising stars in the country scene. So we were delighted when we grabbed a few words with April in the week!

Hi April, We recently featured your brilliant new single ‘Get Ready to Miss Me’. Tell us how the song came about? Hi! Thank y’all so much for featuring it. This song was so fun for me to record. When I first went in to write for this project, we had a writing camp that we did over at Blackbird Studios and I told the writers I wanted a fun song that was empowering but still modern and “Get Ready To Miss Me” came from that. It really lets the listener know that if they don’t feel like they are being treated right they shouldn’t be afraid to say…get ready to miss me!

The video for the single is just brilliant, where you can take on the roles of Faith Hill, Shania Twain and Martina Mcbride. That must have been some fun to make! Which of the three artists did you enjoy being most? The video was such a blast to shoot! I honestly had so much fun with all three artists since they were such big inspirations to me growing up. I think the easiest for me was Faith Hill, which I thought it would be Martina because I listened to her the most growing up. I guess I just had the right facial expressions for Faith and maybe resembled her the most out of the three.

We’ve also featured a number of your fantastic cover videos on the site, a personal favourite being your cover of ‘80’s Mercedes’. I love the way you make these songs your own. If you had to choose your favourite cover, which one would it be?  Thank you so much! I have a blast doing covers and making them my own. I really loved covering “Chains” and kind of countrifying it a little!

So, where did that incredible voice come from? Aww thank you! My dad was actually the worship leader at my church growing up, and he was also in a band so I guess I got my voice from him. My sister is a singer/songwriter as well, so we are just a musical family!

You have a fantastic following on social media. How important do you see the role of social media as a musician today? I think social media is necessary being a modern day artist. You have your fans basically at your finger tips. I remember some of my favorite artists growing up and if I had the chance to see what they did everyday through social media I would absolutely follow them and be a more engaged fan, so I think it’s extremely important!

Tell us a little about the artists that have inspired you in your career? And have you always dreamed of a career in music? I have always wanted to be a singer since I could remember. I listened to a lot of different genres growing up- Gospel, Country, Pop, Folk…so my inspirations range from Martina McBride to Stevie Wonder and John Mayer. I just appreciate all genres of music and find different things about each that I love!

If you could pick the perfect gig, where would it be and which artist would join you on stage for a duet? I think every artist dreams about playing Madison Square Garden, including me! I would love to do a duet with Martina Mcbride. She’s such a fantastic performer.

And if you could gaze ten years into the future, where would you like to see yourself? Happy. I’ve learned not to plan out too much and let God do that for me!

Our website is based in the UK – have you ever played in the UK and would you like to pop across the pond and play in the future? I have never played there but I would absolutely love to visit the UK and play some shows!

To finish, tell us all about your hopes and plans for the rest of 2017. I’m really looking forward to releasing my next single on March 24th called “While We’re Young” and playing more! I absolutely love playing live and getting to connect with fans on such a deep level.
