Kezia Gill released her debut album in 2017 and has been making quite a name for herself on the UK country scene in the last 12 months. With award nominations at the upcoming BCMA awards, a string of festival appearances in the summer just gone and an exciting trip to Australia in the new year, we caught up with Kezia to find out more!
Hi Kezia, it’s great to feature you on Belles and Gals for the first time! To start, for anyone who hasn’t listened to your before, how would you describe your sound?
I’m definitely a country girl, that’s for sure! I’m from an irish family, so I grew up singing All the old Irish/folk music, so I’d say I have an Irish lilt too. I’d say my sound is quite unique.
It’s been a big summer for you, with a string of festival performances. It must have been great to take your debut self-titled album ‘Kezia’ out on the road?
It really was! Writing and producing the album was a long process, so to finally be out singing the songs is wonderful. Nothing beats seeing a crowd sing along to your own songs.
The reception for the album has been fantastic. Are there particular songs that give you an added buzz when you perform them live?
‘Mr Cash’ gets a lot of love. It’s a song I wrote many years ago in Tribute to one of my idols, Johnny Cash, and fellow fans of his music seem to enjoy this one. ‘Easy come Easy go’ is my favourite song to perform live, because I get everyone clapping and singing along. It’s perfect at festivals because I wrote it with crowd participation in mind.
And you’ve recently been nominated for three awards in the upcoming British Country Music Awards. That must fill you with a sense of pride?
It absolutely does. It sounds like a cliche, but I am genuinely just so thrilled to nominated. When I see the accomplished names that I’m up against, I just feel so proud to even be a contender.
And in very big news that has just been announced, you’ll be heading to Australia in the new year, as part of the Buckle and Boots tour. How excited are you about the tour – it’s a fantastic opportunity! And no pressure, but you’ll be flying the flag for UK country!!
I’m excited beyond belief!! It will be the biggest thing I’ve done to date, and It’s still all sinking in. I’m truly humbled that Karl and the team from Buckle and Boots believe in me enough to let me be part of this awesome opportunity. I’ll do my best to fly the flag, and along with the other amazing acts, I have no doubt were gonna put UK Country music firmly on the Map!
To finish, aside from the Australia trip, what can we expect from Kezia Gill in the coming weeks and months!
Well, I’m currently busy working on my new EP. I’m aiming for a release to coincide with the Australia tour. That way I’ll have new music ready for next year’s festival season. It feels so good to be back in the studio, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear the new music!!
