LIVE REVIEW: Sarah Darling @ The Borderline London

Earlier today (October 27th) Country Music Week continued in London with a special afternoon show at the Borderline venue in London.

I was lucky enough to attend Sarah Darling’s sublime set where she showcased several new tracks off her upcoming, eagerly anticipated new album ‘Wonderland‘ which is available to pre-order right now ahead of its March 1st release.

During her stripped back eight song set in the intimate venue the Iowa native serenaded the London crowd with her sweet vocal tone and easy charm.

She wowed the packed crowd with her incredible vocal prowess and all around musicianship showcasing her talents as an all round, performer, and singer/songwriter.

Her set started off with a brand new track which will feature on ‘Wonderland’: ‘Call Me’. This was my second time hearing this song after I heard Sarah performing it at the Grand Ole Opry earlier this year via the radio. It’s a standout from the Nashville based Country darling and showcases her musical growth and highlights that we can expect new sounds on this upcoming record.

The next song from Sarah Darling was the insanely beautiful ‘Fire’. Again this was another new song off the LP and it suits her vocal tone so well. Nobody does Country ballads quite like Sarah and this showcases her lyrical ability on a whole new level.

Next the adopted Brit debuted another brand new song, this time the funky, uptempo ‘Enjoy The Ride’ which is a new sound from her and is all about enjoying the chase when following your dreams. Inspiring and fun this will become a firm fan favourite.

After three consecutive new songs, Darling took things back to her 2017 ‘Dream Country’ LP with the insanely brilliant ‘Where Cowboys Ride’. This got the crowd in full voice and highlighted the fans’ connection with Sarah Darling and her music.

After playing out an all time classic, Sarah switched back to the ‘Wonderland’ LP with a fun performance of ‘Light It Up’ which is a pop infused number and one that once again promises we can expect an eclectic mix of styles on the new record next year.

The last of the new tracks was the gorgeous ‘A Little Bit Of Rain’ which Darling penned with Jenn Bostic and she describes it as her “cautionary tale”. This is a taste of all out Country and is available as a free download to anyone who pre orders ‘Wonderland’. It was a beautiful moment in the set as the crowd fell silent to allow Sarah’s soaring vocals to shine.

The penultimate song of the stellar set from Darling was the stunning ‘Halley’s Comet’. This is always a major highlight of any Sarah Darling show and it proved once again this afternoon. No set from Sarah is complete without a rendition of this inspirational track.

To end her sublime showcase, Sarah Darling covered the Allison Krauss hit ‘You Say It Best When You Say Nothing At All’. This was the major sing-a-long of the day as the London crowd belted out the lyrics in full voice. After hearing many versions of this classic over the years, for me Darling’s is the best of them all. It just seems to fit her perfectly and she makes it totally her own.

Overall this was a wonderful set from Sarah Darling who showcased her new album ‘Wonderland’ with a number of standout songs highlighting that this LP is one of the most anticipated of 2019. After travelling from Cardiff to London to watch a 30 minute set from Sarah, I have to say it was well worth the journey.
