Texas really does give us a lot of fantastic female country artists, and the latest to be brought to my attention from the Lone Star State is Carson McHone.
Her brand new single “ Sad” definitely harks back to her honky tonk roots sonically, with it’s fiddle, steel and electric guitar driven arrangement, and the video was shot in Austin’s White Horse Bar where Carson was a regular performer even before she was legally old enough to drink there:
Taken from her album “ Carousel” which sees its UK release on 25th January on Loose Records, the song like many on this collection tackles a dark subject ( this time it’s the inner struggle with self ) but isn’t in itself melancholy thanks to its upbeat melody. Her roots influences remain very much apparent but since her 2015 release “Goodluck Man” (some of its tracks have been reworked for her new album) Carson has developed as a more contemporary alt-country storyteller. McHone herself describes “Carousel” as “more modern, which is where my interest lies these days, and where my writing is taking me. At the end of the day, it has to be the song that dictates” .
The album saw it’s US release back in October and Carson has naturally been busy with a promotional tour over there, but UK dates have just been announced for early next year which include an appearance at London’s AmericanaFest.
