This Sunday sees the second ‘Belles and Gals’ showcase live event, an event highlighting some of the very best talent on the UK country scene! Tickets here – http://www.wegottickets.com/event/457748
The showcase takes place at the legendary Water Rats venue in London on Sunday evening and for four days we’ll be taking an in depth look at each of the four artists.
Becky Lawrence is most certainly one of our favourite artists here at Belles and Gals, and we’re delighted she’ll be heading up from her south west base for the gig. Becky released her latest EP ‘What it Takes’ back in 2017, with standout tracks such as ‘Eyes of the Lonely’ and ‘That Guy’ (stream the EP below).
We caught up with Becky this week for a fun chat ahead of the gig on Sunday!
What was it that got you started in the music industry. And what is about country music in particular that you are drawn to?
I grew up listening to a huge array of music: from The Carpenters, to Genesis, to AC/DC and of course Dolly Parton but my background is actually Musical Theatre. It was my entire life from the age of about 14 onwards. At 22 I moved to London to pursue my love and went to study musical theatre which was an incredible experience! Whilst there, we had many opportunities to sing songs other than from a musical and I found myself always choosing a country song. It was then I realised that my voice suited singing this style and I really started to take more of an interest into the lyrics and the incredible story telling that the artists of this genre portray. Since then, I’ve never looked back and started writing my own songs and finding my own voice.
And which artists have influenced you in your career, and who are you listening to right now?!
Wow, so many! Reba McEntire & Dolly Parton are of course huge influences but also more recently I’m loving Kacey Musgraves! She has brought country music to a whole new level and is just super sassy. I also love artists like Steve Nicks & Kate Bush because they aren’t afraid to push boundaries.
You’re hosting a fantasy dinner party. You can invite three famous people (alive or dead) – who do you invite?
I always struggle with this question but at the moment, I would have to go with Dolly Parton, Kate Bush and Kacey Musgraves. Imagine those stories!
