Amie Knight is an artist who we featured for the first time in the early days of Belles and Gals – so it was great to catch up with the artist nearly four years later! We chat all things music including album plans, her favourite moment and how she got into country music in the first place!
Hi Amie, I want to start by asking you about your fantastic recent single ‘Even’? How did the idea for the song form?
Thank you I’m glad you like it! I love writing songs that play on words and have a double meaning, this one is about seeking revenge. It is based around a partner who hurts and disrespects you. You feel you want/need to get your own back and get ‘Even’. In doing so you feel you’re no longer left out of the ‘game’ they are playing on you. You feel guilty as it’s not in your nature to hurt someone you love and are regretful of behaving in the same way as them, hence the line “We’re as bad as each other and both too proud to show”. The song idea formed from a relationship, I feel like most people can relate to being taken for granted and sometimes wanting to get ‘even’.
The reaction to the song was brilliant, including national radio play on commercial country radio. That must fill you with a lot of confidence?
This is so far my favourite track off of the upcoming album and I’m so happy and overwhelmed that people are loving it as much as I do. I’ve been eager for people to hear ‘Even’ for months as it’s different to my previous releases.
The last time we featured you on Belles and Gals was in 2016, on the release of your debut single ‘Two Guys’. What’s the difference between 2016 Amie Knight and 2020 Amie Knight?
I can’t believe it’s been 4 years already! Since 2016 I’ve thrown myself into song writing, releasing my debut EP ‘Take it From Here’ in July 2017 and headlined my first sold out show to launch it. I’m now working on my upcoming album with my new producer known as the awesome ‘Scruffy J’. I feel I’ve definitely grown musically, vocally and personally since we last spoke. Like everyone, I have faced challenges and health issues, but I feel stronger for it and hope to showcase that through my music.
What is it about country music that attracted you in the first place? And which artists have inspired you in your career?
I have always loved everything about country music from the heartfelt and honest lyrics, the timeless ballads to the catchy melodies. When I was 6 years old my dad was in a country band, I used to attend all the rehearsals and gigs and eventually learnt the set. There are so many artists I look up to, but I’d have to say Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini, Lady Antebellum, Shania twain and Chris young, just to name a few haha!
If you had to pick a high point in your career, what would it be?
I’d say one of the most memorable was the ‘Voice of Ferndown’, a big local competition in Dorset. I took the plunge and changed my song last minute from a cover to my (what would eventually be) my debut single ‘Two Guys’. I had only written the song a week or so before and only my parents and producer had heard it. It was a proud moment to win with something I had written and reminded me that taking a risk can sometimes pay off. I then went onto release ‘Two Guys’ as my debut single which made the top 10 in the UK iTunes country charts and led me to write and release an EP.
I have to address the elephant in the room – Covid-19. How are you coping as a musician during the current crisis?
I’m fortunate that I also work in childcare, but I really feel for all my fellow musicians at this time that are relying on gigs and music. I miss being in the studio and the buzz from being on stage. I’m still recovering from catching glandular fever back in February, so I haven’t been able to do live streams or even sing at all for a while! Just using the time to write songs, build a new website, refresh and plan for what’s to come once this is over.
