Belles and Gals is honored to bring you a very special interview with Melanie Meriney. She shares all the details about her latest single, “Damn Good Story,” upcoming project, ChaMELeon, and more.

Hi, Melanie, the whole team at Belles and Gals is so excited to catch up with you for this interview. Can you begin by sharing with the readers what music means to you?

Happy to catch up too!  Music has always been a huge part of my life from the time I was little.  My mom really got me into country music radio while my dad was always teaching me about different bands from the 70s and 80s.  When I started writing, songs became my outlet for my emotions and helped me express myself better than I can through words alone.

All About “Damn Good Story”

Back in July, you released your latest single, “Damn Good Story.” What inspired this song?

“Damn Good Story” was written with my friends Krista Angelucci and Chelsea Summers about a summer fling that you know won’t last past the summer, but you go for it anyways.  It’s not specifically autobiographical, but I can definitely relate to the feeling of letting go of trying to control the future and appreciating the moment for what it is.  I think we all need to do more of that.

What is your favorite lyric from “Damn Good Story” and why?

My favorite lyric is probably in the first pre-chorus where it goes “[he’s] saying to me words I know he’s used a thousand times/ but ok, I’ll bite”.  It kind of acknowledges that you know whatever this is is fleeting, but deciding to play along despite that.

What is the message you hope listeners take away from “Damn Good Story?”

“It was never gonna be forever, but he’s gonna make a damn good story someday”- just because things aren’t forever doesn’t mean they don’t count or don’t mean something.  And if you’ve been through hell and back, just know that someday you’re going to laugh about it.  If nothing else, you’ll have a good story to tell.  We can’t feel on top of that mountain if we don’t take the chance to climb it.  Take a chance- who knows what will come of it?

The Success of “Sober You”

Your 2019 single, “Sober You,” has performed extremely well. What is the story behind this song?

Thank you!  I owe my fans for all the listens and shares!  “Sober You” is about unrequited love and knowing that you’ll never get the whole version of someone because their heart belongs to someone else.  My co-writers Aj Kross, Krista Angelucci, and I wanted to play on the phrase “I’ll never get over you” but throw the sober in it.  The narrator is never getting the sober version of this person.

“Sober You” had its exclusive premiere with CMT. What was this incredible experience like for you?

I grew up watching music videos on CMT, so it has always been a dream of mine and I’m very thankful for their support!

Meriney on the Stage

It’s clear you love to perform, and you’ve had some incredible opportunities, like opening for Little Big Town and other artists. Is there a certain performance that is most special to you? Can you share the details and why that performance gets the gold star?

It’s always super cool to open for a big name artist that you’ve followed for a while!  But I think my most special performance would have to be my show in downtown Pittsburgh, which is my hometown.  I played our annual Regatta festival on the main stage and got to perform for so many friends and family against the skyline backdrop of where I grew up.  That was a really cool moment.

If you could share the stage with any country artist and sing a duet, which artist would you want to perform with and which song would you sing?

This is silly, but I would love to sing a Christmas song like “White Christmas” with Brett Eldredge.  I’m in love with his voice and just think it would be the most fun!

ChaMELeon is Coming

You’re getting ready to release your upcoming project, ChaMEleon. What was it like creating this collection?

ChaMELeon is a blend of all of my different influences!  It was so much fun collaborating with my producer (and husband!) Michael Funk on all the sonic nuances.  We had fun with different instruments and styles of music to come together to form this project.

Are there any details you can share about ChaMEleon, like the release date and how many songs are on the project?

We actually broke ChaMELeon into two parts, each part being an EP-length.  So the first volume will be 5 songs.  Our release date for the first EP is going to be late October.

Wise Words from Meriney

During your time so far in the music industry, what is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?

Be authentically you.  There are going to be people in the industry who tell you how to make your music, or more often, how NOT to make your music.  But I think sticking to my guns as an artist has served me best over the years.  Fans appreciate authenticity and real-ness, and it doesn’t always fit into a neat little box.

If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring country artists, what would it be?

Act like a sponge!  Put yourself in a place where you’re surrounded by people better than you and learn from them.  Don’t copy anyone, but take note of their strengths and use it to hone your own unique skill set.  It took me a while to figure this out when I first moved to Nashville.  I didn’t know anyone and didn’t really know how to navigate the music scene.  I wish someone had given me this direction sooner.

We’re so excited to hear ChaMELeon when the first half of this incredible project releases at the end of October. Head over to Melanie Meriney’s website to keep up with all the news.
