Miranda Lambert Releases New Single “If I Was A Cowboy”

What a fantastic couple of weeks it’s been for all the Miranda Lambert fans out there. Not only has it been announced that there is a 13 track Christmas album on the way from Pistol Annies (“Hell Of A Holiday , the talented trio’s first album in three years, will be released on October 22nd, in plenty of time to get you into the festive mood) but last Friday Miranda dropped a solo single of her own, and what a stunner of track it is!
“If I Was A Cowboy” sees Miranda co-writing with Jesse Frasure, the two having met whilst working on the remix of “Tequila Does” . As Miranda explains, “he and I just got together one afternoon for a write and this is what came out of it. He’s a Detroit boy and I’m an East Texan, but somehow we wrote a song about the Wild West together “.

Produced/engineered by Jon Randall, Luke Dick and Jason Leaning, while the song has a really relaxed, dreamy vibe to it (what a wonderful arrangement and gorgeous backing vocals ) the superstar has still managed to incorporate some of the sass she has become known for in the lyrics . She ponders, as the title suggests,  the type of cowboy she would be… “Wanted by the law, but the laws don’t apply to me …I’d be wild and free rolling around these towns like tumbleweed” she sings , continuing with the suggestive “you thought the West was wild, but you ain’t saddled up with me”. And then the punchy tag line comes from seemingly nowhere at the end of the chorus…”If I was a cowboy, I’d be the queen“.  I can just imagine her delivering that one with a cheeky smile and a wink. And it’s not the only time that there’s blurring of gender stereotypes in the song, I love how she tips her hat (or should that be her stetson?) to Willie Nelson in the break…” So mommas if your daughters grow up to be cowboys, so what?”…echoes of Kacey’s “Follow Your Arrow” was my initial reaction.

What a beautifully simple accompanying video to the track, too.

It’s not clear yet if this is a stand alone release or part of a bigger project from Miranda who of course is heading over the pond next March to headline the C2C festival in London, Glasgow and Dublin, but no doubt all will be revealed before then!
