In a joint interview with her husband Matthew Rhys for Variety, Russell revealed, “We’re not that famous.” This candid admission comes despite her status as a Golden Globe winner.
She went on to explain the challenges of securing designer dresses for high-profile events. “Sometimes I can’t even get a dress for the award shows,” Russell confessed. “I’m not, you know, a big celebrity,” she added.
Russell elaborated, “People aren’t really focused on us— and that’s actually quite nice. We have neighbors who are very well-known, and their lives seem incredibly challenging.”
The duo, who began their romance in 2013, also participated in a video interview with the magazine. During the interview, Rhys humorously stated that his choice of roles is influenced by financial considerations. “The highest bidder wins, it’s quite straightforward,” he quipped, causing Russell to laugh until she cried.
“With three kids and a mortgage to pay,” he added, “I’m all in… I’m ready to sell my talents to the highest bidder without any reservations.”
Russell has two children, River, 19, and Willa, 13, from her previous marriage to Shane Deary, and a ten-year-old son, Sam, with Rhys.
Award Season Excitement
Both members of the couple have been recognized with Emmy nominations—Russell for her role in “The Diplomat” and Rhys for his performances in “Widow’s Bay” and “The Beast In Me.”
The couple’s wardrobe choices are curated by stylist Frank Flemming, who, despite their claims of being less famous, consistently ensures they are dressed to impress at events. Flemming hasn’t publicly commented on Russell’s approach to red carpet fashion, but it’s clear he’s succeeded in helping them make a statement.
With the 2026 Emmys scheduled for September 14, all eyes will undoubtedly be on what Russell decides to wear, showcasing perhaps another stunning off-the-rack choice.
