In country music right now, there’s multiple girl groups making their way to the top of the charts. Maddie and Tae were nominated for the Vocal Duo of the Year award at the ACMAs and Ward Thomas’ album Cartwheels reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, making them the first UK country act to take the title. With success in female country groups growing, we thought we’d take a look back at two girl groups who may not be making music together anymore, but who definitely paved the way.
THE WRECKERS One of my absolute personal favourites. I remember hearing a snippet of The Wreckers’ music from their small appearance on US TV show One Tree Hill. As soon as The Good Kind finished playing I was straight on the internet researching who these girls were. Turns out they were Jessica Harp and Michelle Branch. Their album Stand Still, Look Pretty is full of compelling lyrics of love, independence and reminiscent memories. In 2008 the duo decided to spilt to continue work on their solo careers however said they would still record as The Wreckers as a side project. I’m still eagerly waiting for their second album nine years on. Turns out I’m not the only one. Country singer/actress Lucy Hale Shazamed their song Tennessee with the caption ‘Still one of my favorite albums ever. Reunite pleeeeease.’ Maybe we should start a petition eh Luce?
PISTOL ANNIES Why oh why have we not had a Pistol Annies album since 2013? These girls were my spirit animals. Miranda, Ashley and Angeleena oozed sass, and ain’t nobody messing with the Pistol Annies. Between their alcoholic brothers, stealing money from ‘poor ol’ Billy, bless his heart’ and trying not to let blues be a buzzkill, these girls knew what they wanted to say and went right out and said it. With lyrics that were fun, mischievous and occasionally melancholic, they had a song for whatever mood you were feeling. Unfortunately the badass babes decided to take a `temporary hiatus’ but in 2016 Miranda and Ashley insisted that they intend to work together again when each of them is available. A glimmer of hope!
Even though we may be left without The Wreckers and The Pistol Annies we’ve still got some girl power talent to follow. But if any members of the aforementioned group somehow happen to read this article, please consider making more music together so I can dance around my room like an idiot thinking I’m a kickass troublemaker again.
