Maren Morris has had an incredible two years after bursting onto the country music scene back in 2015. Maren’s major label debut ‘Hero’ displays her incredible voice whilst also showcasing the singer-songwriter’s talented writing skill.

The Grammy winning single “My church” is the perfect driving song, encapsulating the storytelling nature of country music whilst also giving a nod to the likes of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. However, Maren doesn’t limit herself to the country music genre. Her many faceted musical influences shine throughout the album; including in “Once”. This powerful and soulful song could move even the hardiest of individuals into an emotional stupor. Her ability to blend genre whilst preserving a country sound follows through in songs such as “Sugar” and “Drunk Girls Don’t Cry”. Both country at heart but sprinkled with popular music influences. It’s obvious throughout the album that Maren is confident in her sound, breaking the country taboo but remaining strong in her country routes.

“Rich” is a particularly interesting piece, a nod to hip-hop, with a flow aching to challenge even the best of urban artists with lyrics such as “Vegas at the Mandarin, high roller gambling. Me and diddy dripping diamonds like Marilyn.” Alongside this, the country-pop earworm of “80’s Mercedes” has a melodic and lyrical flow that you’ll be humming for days. The simplistic bass and piano combination will be sure to have you hooked.

The most recent single “I could use a love song” is a smooth, slow piece that blends a steel pedal guitar with a bass that will make you subconsciously tap your feet. Although a mellow piece, it is packed with emotion with lyrics such as “Give me a sign or a rhyme or a reason. Just something that I can believe in.” displaying the desire for her to experience love once again. Overall, Maren Morris’ major label debut is an impressive breakthrough into country music. Lyrically sound with cleverly blended and genre challenging melodies, Maren is sure to see a long and successful career.
