Katy Galloway – “Twenty Something” EP Out Today!
Today we’re delighted to feature Katy Galloway, on the release day of her brand new EP ‘Twenty Something’. The EP is a fantastic listen, with just the right mix of almost quirky pop country and those slower numbers that really show off the vocals of the Edinburgh/Cheshire based singer, with a nice slice of Badass in the middle too! Have a listen for yourself below!
I caught up with Katy to chat all about the EP – and yes, we at Belles and Gals are as excited as you are Katie!!
Hi Katy, It’s great to feature you on Belles and Gals for the first time! Can I start by asking you to describe your sound to anyone listening to you for the first time?
Hi Nick! Thank you so much for having me! I’ve read Belles and Gals for ages so it is lovely to be featured! Of course, so I would say that I lean on the side of country pop, think, Kelsea Ballerini, Lauren Alaina and 2008 Taylor Swift!
Today sees the release of your ‘Twenty Something’ EP. How are the excitement levels right now?!
I don’t think I can quite explain how excited I am! I haven’t released new music for a while and I have worked so hard on this EP and I can’t wait to hear people’s thoughts on the tracks! I just hope people enjoy them!
The EP offers a fantastic mix of country music – a perfect blend of up tempo country pop and slower ballads. How long was the EP in the making?
I started working on it in October 2017 so about a year and a half. It was a slightly different EP process as I didn’t write all the songs and then pick my favourites, it was more a write a song, record a song then write another kind of process so it was quite spread out and I wanted to make sure I got it right.
Do you have a set songwriting process?
It changes quite a bit for me. Usually I start with some kind of idea of a feeling I want to write about or a set phrase that I think would make a good hook and I will start playing and messing around with tunes and lyrics. I usually record everything on a voice memo so then if I play something I like then I can listen to it again. Sometimes it can be a really quick process and I come out with a song 10 minutes later and sometimes it can take days and still not be right! Usually when it takes days it is because I’m not quite sure what I am feeling yet so I can’t write it down!
And which artists have influenced you in your career?
Like many of the female country pop artists of my age, Taylor Swift had a huge influence on me when I was about 10 or 11. She inspired me to start songwriting and kind of kicked off my love of country music! Kacey Musgraves was another huge one for me as I listened to Merry Go Round as a free download from Amazon Music and I found it completely randomly but immediately loved it! Other artists include Kelsea Ballerini, Ward Thomas and Lauren Alaina.
You last released an EP back in 2015! How do you feel you’ve changed as an artist in that time?
I have definitely changed a huge amount! I released Games EP when I was 16 and it was kind of my first go at recording music and having it available to a real audience. The songs on that EP were the first real songs I had written and I think you can definitely tell! It was all done acoustically and although Games does hold a truly special place in my heart as the first EP I ever released, I definitely think I have changed hugely. The songs on this EP are more grown up and honest I think and this EP is much more country than Games which I love. Some of the songs were produced in a studio in Nashville so they have a lovely country sound in the instrumentals that I am so happy with!
To finish, what are your hopes and plans for the rest of 2019?
Of course! I am hoping to do a small tour in the summer so make sure to keep checking my social media to keep up to date with that! If you have any places that you would definitely like me to make it to then please let me know, no promises but I can try! I’ll probably also get back writing and back in the studio so that I can release more music! I’m definitely excited to see where this year takes me!
