During a visit to “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Tuesday, Martha Stewart recounted how she ended up with a broken toe, an injury caused by Knicks guard Jalen Brunson.
The 84-year-old lifestyle expert was enjoying the game from the courtside seats at Madison Square Garden in May during a playoff match against the Indiana Pacers when Brunson accidentally crashed into her. The incident resulted in what she now humorously refers to as the “Brunson Fracture” in her big toe.
Stewart offered some sage advice on footwear for sports events after Fallon presented a photograph of her at the game wearing open-toed, strappy gold sandals. “Never, ever wear open-toed shoes to a game like that when you’re sitting on the floor,” she recommended.
The irony, Stewart noted, is that these open-toed shoes have become a staple in her attire due to the injury.
“That’s why I’m sporting open-toed shoes now, because they are the only type I can comfortably wear,” she explained, showcasing her Manolo Blahnik Patopia Slingback Sandals, which cost $835, while on the show.
Reflecting on the incident, Stewart mentioned that Brunson didn’t just step on her foot—he also ended up in her lap. Amid the commotion, she noted an unexpected detail about the NBA player.
“I grabbed his arm, and it was icy cold,” she recalled. “You would expect him to be sweaty from playing, but he was cool as a cucumber.”
Stewart’s immediate reaction to the Knicks player was notably calm and composed.
“All I said was ‘It’s OK,’” she shared. “He didn’t realize he had broken my foot at that moment, but indeed, he had.”
To make the situation even more challenging, the game went into overtime, which meant Stewart had to remain seated with her painful toe.
“I was stuck in my seat and couldn’t leave to tend to my toe,” she lamented.
Stewart humorously pointed out that despite Brunson’s height of 6-foot-2, it was his large feet that were memorable. “He’s not even that big… but he does have big feet,” she commented.
When Fallon inquired if she had followed up with Brunson post-game, Stewart revealed she had instead spoken to his parents, laughing as she shared that his father is an assistant coach for the team.
Despite the mishap, Brunson made it up to her in a small but sweet way; Stewart received a basketball signed by him for her grandchild.
Broken toe aside, Stewart is as active as ever, currently featuring in American Eagle’s holiday campaign and continuing to post glamorous shots by the pool.
Whether she’s enjoying a game courtside or dining elegantly, Martha Stewart continues to be the consummate guest wherever she goes.
