Hidden behind this checkbox are sensitive details that can be used for commercial, technical, or even malicious purposes.
When you first launch an app, multiple prompts may pop up requesting access to various phone features. Many users quickly grant these permissions to use the app without interruption, but this habit is not without risks.
Cybersecurity experts emphasize that an app only requires specific permissions to function properly. Providing broad access can inadvertently expose data unrelated to the intended use. Indeed, a smartphone contains not just shareable content but also photographed documents, IDs, bank cards, proofs of address, and screenshots containing sensitive information.
In 2023, researchers discovered malicious apps that could automatically scan content stored on phones to find recovery phrases linked to cryptocurrency wallets. These apps were later removed from Google’s and Apple’s stores. This incident demonstrated how overly broad access could be exploited on a large scale without the user’s awareness.
Given this, no app should automatically gain full access to a phone’s camera roll. Why? Because complete access allows an app to browse through all photos and videos stored on the device, including those unrelated to the app’s function, and to analyze metadata such as date, location, or faces in the images.
Experts, therefore, recommend regularly checking and restricting the permissions granted to apps to the bare minimum necessary. This can be done by going to the phone’s settings, accessing the “Privacy” or “Permissions” section, and reviewing permissions for each app. Users can then select “Choose Photos” or completely disable permission if it is not essential. Denying global access may make content selection slightly more cumbersome, but it significantly reduces the risk of errors and limits the exposure of personal data.
