A single click could lead to savings of nearly $200 a year.

By 2026, navigating mobile plans has become challenging. Major carriers like SFR, Orange, and Bouygues Telecom are constantly tweaking their prices. At the same time, promotional offers are proliferating. Today, a plan with unlimited calls and SMS, plus about 20 GB of data, costs around $20 to $22 per month for 4G. For 5G, prices range from $26 to $28. While these rates appear stable, they hide significant variations depending on the timing and the customer profile.

Indeed, these prices are primarily introductory offers designed to attract new customers. Once you subscribe, the situation changes. A discount may expire after a few months, an option may be added, or a “service evolution” may justify a few extra dollars on the bill. Over time, the gap widens. Meanwhile, carriers continue to introduce new budget-friendly plans… but only for new recruits. Consequently, two subscribers with nearly identical plans might end up paying vastly different amounts. Some remain around $10 to $15 thanks to a recent offer, while others may exceed $30 for comparable service.

In this scenario, the only way to stay on the lower end of the price spectrum is to switch carriers regularly. As long as promotions are exclusive to new customers, loyalty typically means missing out on the best rates. In practice, those who switch providers every one to two years keep their plans in the $10 to $20 range, whereas others see their costs soar far higher. The savings are far from trivial: between $120 and $200 annually, sometimes more depending on the initial plan.

Moreover, today everything is streamlined to facilitate switching. Number portability allows you to keep your line without interruption, and the process takes just a few minutes. Simply compare the offers, select a new plan, and let the new provider handle the rest. There’s no need to cancel your service yourself or even notify your old provider. The switch is completed within a few days. The question of cancellation fees remains. Many plans are now non-committal, allowing you to cancel at any time without fees. For contracted services (12 or 24 months), fees may apply, but they are limited, especially after the first year. Additionally, many carriers offer to reimburse these fees to attract new clients.

Last but not least: it’s crucial to regularly check for available offers. It’s not necessary to do this monthly, but looking once or twice a year is often enough to find a better deal. It’s worth noting that network quality is generally equivalent for typical use today, and differences in service are minimal for most users. What really changes is the amount on the bill at the end of the month.
