Megan Thee Stallion Seeks Restraining Order Against Tory Lanez
LOS ANGELES (AP) — On Tuesday, Megan Thee Stallion requested a court to enforce a restraining order against Tory Lanez, whom she accuses of continuing to harass her from behind bars. Lanez is currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting her in the feet.

In a legal move at the Los Angeles Superior Court, the renowned rapper Megan Pete, known professionally as Megan Thee Stallion, urged the court to bar Lanez from using third parties to perpetuate the online harassment that began before his incarceration. Lanez, a Canadian rapper whose real name is Daystar Peterson, seems undeterred by his prison sentence, according to the filings.
The court documents express concerns about Peterson’s ongoing behavior: “Mr. Peterson, even from prison, shows a relentless intent to continue this disturbing behavior. Despite his 10-year sentence for the violent act against Ms. Pete, he still inflicts ongoing trauma and revictimization,” the petition stated.
Allegations of Coordinated Attacks
According to the petition, evidence from call logs at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi indicates that Lanez is orchestrating efforts to undermine Megan’s credibility.
At the time of writing, requests for comments from Lanez’s legal team remain unanswered. A court hearing concerning the restraining order is set for January 9.
The petition also highlights that certain bloggers, allegedly directed by Lanez, continue to question Megan’s accounts, propagating untrue assertions such as the disappearance of the gun and bullet fragments involved in the incident.
It is pointed out that a previous protective order designed to halt Lanez’s harassment is no longer active, a situation the petition describes as a gap and defect in the criminal justice system.
Background of the Case
In December 2022, Lanez was found guilty on multiple charges: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and negligent discharge of a firearm.
A request for a retrial made by Lanez’s attorneys was denied, and they are currently appealing the conviction. In August of last year, Lanez received his decade-long sentence, seemingly ending a tumultuous three-year legal and public saga that disrupted both his and Megan’s lives and careers.
Furthermore, Megan has singled out one blogger, Elizabeth Milagro Cooper—who is also a defendant in a separate lawsuit—accusing her of being a primary voice for Lanez. Cooper allegedly disseminates falsehoods on social media and YouTube, with one post questioning the veracity of Megan’s shooting and another labeling her a “professional victim.”
Michael Pancier, Cooper’s lawyer, has refrained from commenting on the California petition but noted that their response to the federal lawsuit would be forthcoming.
A prior motion to dismiss Megan’s lawsuit against Cooper criticized it for containing “dubious legal claims” and “irrelevant allegations.”
Megan testified that the shooting occurred in July 2020 when, after leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s home in the Hollywood Hills, Lanez shot at her feet and demanded she dance while she attempted to walk away from their vehicle. She only disclosed Lanez as the shooter months after the incident.
Cultural Impact of the Case
The case stirred considerable controversy within the hip-hop community, raising issues such as the hesitancy among Black victims to engage with law enforcement, gender dynamics within hip-hop, online hostility, the protection of Black women, and the specific misogyny faced by Black women, known as misogynoir.
At the time of the incident, Megan Thee Stallion was already on her way to stardom, and her career has only skyrocketed since. In 2021, she clinched a Grammy for best new artist and topped the charts with hits like “Savage” featuring Beyoncé, and appeared on Cardi B’s “WAP.”
Lanez, aged 32, started his career in 2009 with mixtapes and gradually moved to major label albums, with his recent works hitting the top 10 on Billboard’s charts.
