Carlos Aranda, a United States Navy handler, first partnered with Donnie during his training at the Norfolk naval base in Virginia. Aranda credits Donnie not only as a partner but also as a mentor. “They pair you with a dog that knows what it’s doing,” he explained to FOX 26 News. “He showed me the ropes and helped me become the handler I am today.”
For three years, the pair worked on critical missions, including assignments tied to the protection of the U.S. president. However, their paths eventually diverged—Aranda was transferred to California’s Lemoore Naval Air Station, while Donnie continued his duties in Norfolk with a new handler.
A Retirement That Changed Everything
Fate intervened when Donnie suffered a leg injury, forcing him into early retirement. For Aranda, this was the moment he had been waiting for—a chance to bring his loyal partner home for good.
Determined to reunite with Donnie, Aranda reached out to Paws of War, a New York-based organization specializing in helping veterans and their service animals reconnect. The group not only organized Donnie’s cross-country journey to California but also committed to assisting Aranda with the ongoing care Donnie would need as a retired working dog.
An Emotional Reunion
After a year and a half apart, Aranda and Donnie were finally reunited in Selma, California, during an event filled with joy and tears. The bond between them was evident as they embraced, both visibly thrilled to be back together.
“I can’t wait to take him to the beach,” Aranda shared, already making plans for their civilian life. “I’m excited to give him a pup cup, take him to the dog park, and let him enjoy life.”
A New Chapter Together
With two years remaining in his service at Lemoore, Aranda is already thinking ahead. He plans to relocate to San Diego, where he and Donnie can enjoy a well-deserved new chapter together.
Thanks to the support of Paws of War and Aranda’s unwavering determination, Donnie is now living his retirement years surrounded by love and care, proving that even after service, the bond between a handler and their dog can endure.
