Instead of just a syringe in his back, his entire body was covered in needles, his face with eight syringes stabbed into it. While the scene was shot and included in an early rough cut, the studio ultimately decided it was too intense for a film that was meant to appeal to a younger audience. As Dante explains, “It was really frightening. But I think there was a little bit of humor in it, too. In any case, we filmed it, it was in the first cut, and we were told it was better not to include it in the final version.”

One of the film’s most memorable moments, where the character Kate recounts the tragic story of her father dying while dressed as Santa Claus, was also initially rejected by the studio. However, Dante fought for it, and the scene ended up becoming one of the most haunting and memorable moments in the film.
