This was a perfect example of the savvy of Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, the studios behind films like Paranormal Activity and The Conjuring. Their ability to bring a killer doll story to life, featuring a doll with artificial intelligence and some rather murderous tendencies, hit the right notes with audiences.
But the film’s success didn’t come just from the story itself. A big part of it was thanks to social media buzz, where M3GAN quickly became a character that transcended the movie. It wasn’t just a random twist of fate when one of the film’s scenes went viral, eventually sparking a TikTok trend. Much like other viral moments, such as those from Wednesday (the Netflix series with Jenna Ortega), the marketing team at Universal knew exactly how to leverage this unexpected moment.
The Teaser’s Return to Iconic Moments
Now, the first teaser for M3GAN 2.0 takes a direct cue from this phenomenon. The scene in question is brief, clocking in at about eight seconds in the original movie. It’s the moment where M3GAN, in a somewhat eerie fashion, dances down a hallway before grabbing a letter opener and continuing her rampage. This strange and somewhat unsettling dance became a viral sensation, sparking a social media dance challenge that further fueled excitement for the film.
Universal Studios didn’t waste any time jumping on this trend. They went all in with promotional content dedicated to the dance, even sending a troupe of dancers dressed as M3GAN on a tour across the U.S. to perform in various cities. Under the guidance of Michael Moses, Universal’s head of marketing, the campaign successfully capitalized on this viral moment to boost the movie’s profile.
It’s no surprise, then, that the teaser for the sequel essentially recreates this famous dance, tapping into the same audience instincts and keeping the viral magic alive for the upcoming film.
M3GAN Faces a New Threat
The plot of M3GAN 2.0 picks up two years after the events of the original film. Gemma (played by Allison Williams), M3GAN’s creator, is now a well-known figure, especially for her views on artificial intelligence. She is regularly consulted by the government, while her niece Cady (played by Violet McGraw) has grown into a rebellious teenager.
What Gemma and Cady don’t know is that M3GAN’s technology has been stolen and turned into a military weapon and ultimate spy. A new M3GAN prototype, named Amelia (voiced by Ivanna Sakhno, known for her role in Ahsoka), is far more advanced, but of course, she escapes the control of her creators. In order to stop this rogue AI, Gemma’s only option is to resurrect M3GAN, upgrade her, and turn her into the ultimate weapon capable of taking down Amelia.
For the sequel, director Gerard Johnstone, who previously directed the first film, has taken on screenwriting duties himself, replacing Akela Cooper, who penned the original movie.
The Expanding M3GAN Universe
In addition to M3GAN 2.0, the M3GAN universe is set to expand with a spinoff film titled SOULM8TE. Directed by Kate Dolan, this film will explore another form of artificial intelligence—this time an android designed to help people cope with grief. The story centers around a widower who buys the robot to help him get over the death of his wife. As you might expect, things go terribly wrong when the machine develops a bit too much attachment to its human charge. Described as an erotic thriller, SOULM8TE is set to release in January 2026.
With other films like L.I.A. of Evil (2024) and Companion (2025) already exploring similar AI themes, the topic of artificial intelligence continues to dominate Hollywood. Yet, with its blend of horror, humor, and cultural impact, M3GAN 2.0 promises to stand out.
M3GAN 2.0 is scheduled for release in theaters on June 25, 2025.
