This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
Often relegated to the category of guilty pleasures, this savory snack might actually help better manage hunger and therefore weight, according to nutrition experts.
Snacking: A Misunderstood Habit?
Snacks, especially salty, crunchy ones sold in bags, often get a bad rap. However, nutrition experts increasingly argue that the issue is not necessarily with the snack itself but how it is consumed and what accompanies it. The goal isn’t to snack mindlessly, but to use these food breaks to stabilize energy, prevent intense hunger spikes, and reduce overeating at the next meal.
Dietitians emphasize a crucial point: an effective snack shouldn’t just satisfy a fleeting craving; it should also provide nutrients that aid in feeling full. “Snacks should combine carbohydrates and proteins to give you a sense of fullness, energy, and long-lasting satisfaction,” states Katie Drakeford, a registered dietitian. This combination helps to avoid hunger spikes that might lead to overeating later.
Fibers and healthy fats also play a significant role, as their slower digestion helps extend the feeling of fullness. Foods like nuts, certain types of cheese, or fiber-rich fruits are great examples of how a snack can be nourishing without being heavy. The clear message from professionals is: demonizing a food entirely doesn’t help, especially if it leads to frustration and repeated binges.
The Case for Chips
In this context, one often-avoided product comes back into discussion when people are watching their weight: chips. Their main appeal, according to experts, is meeting a specific craving for something salty and crunchy, which can otherwise become overwhelming. The key is not to make them a staple but to incorporate them in reasonable portions, paired with more nutritionally rich items. “Consider serving them with salsa or Greek yogurt seasoned with lime juice, salt, and pepper,” suggests Jenn Fink, a registered dietitian. “Salsa enhances the flavor and adds valuable nutrients like fiber, lycopene, quercetin, and capsaicin, which can reduce inflammation and support weight loss,” she adds. “Greek yogurt, on the other hand, provides protein and helps regulate appetite,” adds Jasmin Ilkay, another dietitian.
As mentioned, fibers are also crucial. Today, there are healthier versions of this snack made from vegetables or legumes. “For a healthier option, opt for chips made from cauliflower or beans,” recommends Jasmin Ilkay. So, the next time you feel a little peckish, remember, this option is far from prohibitive in a weight loss program.
