Far from the tiny dachshunds or chihuahuas, some dog breeds are so powerful that they even outmatch large wild predators.
While some might fear cat scratches, others are wary of dog bites: while they are our best friends, animals can sometimes react violently when pushed to their limits, whether scared, stressed, injured, or vulnerable. This is why children are taught that dogs, as cute as they may be, are not toys and that their space must be respected when they signal the need. Indeed, most of the time, our four-legged friends are not unpredictable and show signs of discomfort before resorting to biting; biting is often a last resort, regardless of the breed.
Unfortunately, some dog breeds suffer from a bad reputation. For instance, although it has a better image, a Labrador Retriever has slightly more bite force than a Doberman. However, the power of the bite doesn’t affect the animal’s behavior: a well-trained and healthy dog of any breed will not show aggression without reason. Nonetheless, even if they are no more prone to biting than their peers, some dogs possess more impressive attributes. We often imagine that Rottweilers or Pitbulls, with their robust stature, have the most powerful jaws. However, they don’t even make the top ten. One breed in particular dethrones them all by a large margin: the Kangal, also known as the Anatolian Shepherd.
The Kangal is a very imposing dog, standing over 31.5 inches at the withers and weighing up to 143 pounds. Bred for centuries to guard livestock and protect against packs of wolves or even bears, it’s no wonder it is considered one of the most powerful dogs in the world. Its jaw can exert a pressure of 743 psi (pounds per square inch), which is about 520 kg/cm²! This is the strongest bite force ever measured in a dog. For comparison, the bite of a jaguar – which has the most powerful jaw among felines – is estimated at about 500 kg/cm². The Kangal significantly surpasses even the great white shark with its 300 kg/cm².
Despite its phenomenal jaw strength, the Kangal is known for being a real gentle giant: calm and affectionate, even with children, if socialized from a young age. However, professional trainers do not recommend it for novice owners, due to its very independent and territorial nature, which requires solid and consistent training. The Anatolian Shepherd is known to be an excellent guard dog, ready to defend its territory and family at all costs against any threat, whether it’s a stranger or just a cat wandering by. It’s best, therefore, not to trespass on its turf.
While the Kangal surpasses all others in terms of power, some other dogs also have jaws capable of inflicting serious damage. In second place, we find the Bandog, with a bite force of 730 psi (approximately 510 kg/cm²), followed by the Cane Corso with 700 psi (about 490 kg/cm²). Conversely, despite its reputation as a dangerous dog, the bite pressure of a Pitbull’s jaw is “only” 235 psi, which is 165 kg/cm². Not surprisingly, the Chihuahua is much less impressive with its 100 psi, approximately 70kg/cm², roughly equivalent to a human’s jaw.
