Elon Musk’s Evolution: From Tech CEO to a Fuller Head of Hair

Elon Musk, once known for his leadership at PayPal, has seen as much transformation in his hairline as he has in his career. Dr. Jeffrey Epstein, MD, a specialist in hair restoration based in New York and Miami who has never treated Musk, believes it is almost certain that the billionaire entrepreneur has undergone hair transplant surgery.

Dr. Epstein remarked to Page Six, “Looking back at his photos from the PayPal era, around the time he sold the company in 2002, he was quite bald.” He explained that Musk showed what is classified between a level three and four hair loss out of a possible seven, with virtually no signs of hair thinning at the front nowadays.

The expert noted that during the early 2000s, Musk’s hair greatly thinned at the front, resembling what he termed “the Prince William style,” which features a noticeably receding hairline with sparse, fine hairs over the front third of the head.

According to Epstein, Musk was an excellent candidate for hair transplant surgery due to his ample hair on the sides and back of his head, which are the prime areas for harvesting hair for transplantation. He mentioned that the most effective and natural-looking results typically come from procedures where hair from these areas is moved to the front.

Understanding the Hair Transplant Process

Epstein detailed that the type of hair transplant surgery Musk likely underwent years ago involved some discomfort but wasn’t excessively painful. Most individuals look normal again about a week after the procedure, although it generally takes six months for the transplanted hair to fully regrow after initially falling out.

The cost of such a surgery isn’t trivial: a single procedure may range from $8,000 to $15,000. Epstein speculated that Musk probably had at least two of these surgeries, costing him between $20,000 and $30,000 in total—a minor expense for someone ranked as the 54th wealthiest person in the world.

Epstein concluded that Musk achieved “a good result” from his hair transplant. He observed, “To an untrained eye, it appears completely natural, but those of us in the field know what signs to look for.”
