Introducing Charlotte Young
Today we’re delighted to feature Charlotte Young for the first time! We caught up with Charlotte for a chat about all things music, including her debut EP ‘Blown Away’.
You released your debut EP earlier ‘Blown Away’ earlier this year to great success. You must have been delighted by the reaction?
To say I was delighted was an understatement I’m still completely overwhelmed and amazed by the response Blown Away has had! So grateful and thankful to every single person involved in its success, just feels like an incredible achievement for my first ever release!
On the EP is the single release ‘Whiplash’. Can you give us an insight into how the song came about?
So Whiplash sort of happened at whiplash speed, so quick and unexpected. I had a friend who met somebody and that person was so unclear and indecisive about what they wanted from one minute to the next that my friend was so frustrated she just turned around to me and said “I feel like he’s giving me whiplash” a few hours after that I sat down with my guitar and whiplash was born! I wanted that constant beat and build up so that you’d feel transported in the song to being in a car and when the beats stop suddenly I wanted to give that feeling of whiplash.
If you had to describe your music to someone listening for the first time, what would you say?
So to anybody who is new to my music I’d say that they can expect honesty and a bit of a kick to my music, I like to have an impactful feeling with how it comes across. I’d also say that I try my best to explain lyrically the entire situation and make you feel like you can visualise the situation. I’d probably then add that it can feel like a mix between Lee Ann Womack, Miranda Lambert and Luke Combs.
Tell us a little about your songwriting process?
In regards to my songwriting process, it’s very unpredictable! Sometimes the ideas come flying by and I can have a song written in twenty minutes, others are a true labour of love and take a little while longer. My main thing is I don’t rush or force them, I let the lyrics come to me when they’re ready to, I like to present myself with an idea and just see where my mind is gonna take it. Often for me, the lyrics come first and I’ll just sit with my guitar and try and work out what fits!
And which artists have influenced you in your career?
For me, I grew up listening to a huge variety of music which means my influences are all over the place! My all time favourite band are Aerosmith so I can’t talk about influences without mentioning them because I honestly wouldn’t be a musician if it wasn’t for them. Then comes our Queen Dolly Parton, I feel that Dolly makes me feel like I could conquer the earth and that my own songs can be my weapon of choice and I just think she is a true inspiration. The third major influence for me would be Taylor Swift. Growing up hearing Taylor Swifts music made me feel like if I wanted to write and sing, it wouldn’t be weird and it didn’t matter what others thought about it because it was therapy for me. Others stretch from Fleetwood Mac all the way through to Merle Haggard, George Strait, Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood. So many I could speak about!
To finish, tell us about your plans for the coming months, including any live streams.
So I’ll be doing as many lives as I can throughout the following months including a Weekly live on a Wednesday which I’ll be starting super soon and also I’m hoping to get back in studio for EP number 2! Just trying to keep as creative as possible. Will also be doing a live on behalf of Whiskey and Cigarettes July 11th!
