Whether at home, on a walk, or during chilly nights, keeping your baby warm without overburdening them requires some clever tricks. Alice Malbois, a pediatric nurse, shares her advice on how to ensure your little one stays cozy throughout the winter.
As temperatures plummet, every parent worries about their baby getting cold. However, the key isn’t just to pile on layers of clothing. There are simple measures to keep your baby comfortably warm. At home, even with the heating on, it’s crucial to dress your baby in appropriate seasonal clothes. “If you find their skin feels cold, skin-to-skin contact is a great way to warm your baby with your own body heat,” advises Alice Malbois, pediatric nurse. Depending on the indoor temperature during winter, dress your baby in a long-sleeved onesie, a light sweater or cardigan, pants, and either socks or booties to keep them nice and warm.
When taking your baby outside in winter, it’s best to avoid outings “when temperatures are significantly below seasonal norms,” the nurse suggests. Always ensure your baby is well-covered, protecting their head, ears, hands, and feet, and choose suitable outerwear: a footmuff or snowsuit for the stroller, and a babywearing coat or blanket for physical carrying. Gloves, a hat, a scarf, and shoes are also essential. Our tip: choose hats with ear flaps that cover well and fasten under the chin. And if you go into a store or get into your car, uncover your baby to prevent overheating.
Even at night, your baby needs protection from the cold, even if your home is heated. Before putting them to bed, check the temperature of their room to ensure they can sleep under the best conditions. It should be between 64 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Maintain a proper humidity level in this room and air it out at least twice a day, such as in the morning and late afternoon when your baby is not in the room.
In terms of clothing, opt for a long-sleeved onesie or pajamas and a season-appropriate TOG 2 sleep sack. Avoid blankets in the crib to prevent the risk of sudden infant death syndrome; if the temperature drops, opt for a warmer sleep sack or pajamas. Overall, choose soft, breathable materials like cotton for comfort.
