The beloved musical “Chess,” which saw just 68 regular showings on Broadway before its premature closure in 1988 and generated a popular soundtrack by two ABBA members, is staging a remarkable return nearly four decades later.
Ticket sales for the show’s revival commenced this past Monday, and enthusiastic fans were spotted queuing up by 3 a.m. at the Imperial Theatre. They were eager not just for tickets but also for a special-edition poster autographed by stars Lea Michele, Aaron Tveit, and Nicholas Christopher.
(The first 50 individuals to purchase tickets were the lucky recipients of the coveted posters, causing a line to extend along West 45th Street in the early morning hours.)
Reports indicate that one particularly dedicated fan even spent the night in their vehicle to ensure a spot in line.
A source revealed: “Among those up before the crack of dawn were a group of women who had previously secured their tickets online, yet returned to snag more,” along with fans clutching Playbills from the original Broadway production.
A touch of sentimentality was added as Michele marked her Broadway debut 30 years ago in “Les Misérables” at the very same Imperial Theatre.
The musical, featuring music and lyrics by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Tony-winning Tim Rice, tells the tale of a Cold War-era chess tournament between two grandmasters.
The original soundtrack boasted the chart-topping hit “One Night in Bangkok,” which reached number three in 1985, prior to the show’s successful run in London’s West End in 1986.
This revival features a fresh script by acclaimed screenwriter Danny Strong, known for his work on “Dope Sick,” “Empire,” and “Game Change,” with Michael Mayer at the helm as director.
Broadway is buzzing this season with celebrities, reports The Post. Stars include former “Glee” standout Michele, along with James Corden, Neil Patrick Harris, Bobby Cannavale, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, Kristin Chenoweth, and others.
