It seems she’s just as assertive as a spectator.
According to Page Six, the acclaimed Broadway actress confronted a disruptive audience member at a show she was attending, unleashing what has been dubbed the “Full Lupone.”
Reports indicate that while Lupone was at the Duke on 42nd Street this past weekend for Drew Droege’s acclaimed play “Messy White Gays,” a woman in the audience was behaving as if she were at a bachelorette party rather than an off-Broadway show.
The disruptive patron reportedly spent much of the play loudly using profanity and shouting phrases like “Yes b*tch!” in a drunken manner.
Following the performance, it’s reported that Lupone confronted the noisy audience member, sharply telling her, “Never go to the theater again!”
Witnesses say the woman wilted under Lupone’s intense stare and promptly apologized.
Lupone’s direct approach to dealing with audience misbehavior is well-known.
In 2009, during a performance of “Gypsy,” the three-time Tony-winner famously halted her song to address an audience member who was taking photos with a cell phone. She has also been known to physically remove phones from spectators’ hands.
Lupone has even expressed that the prevalence of smartphones might drive her to retire from stage performances. She once commented after confiscating a phone, “It isn’t changing, it’s only getting worse. And it’s stressful. It’s incredibly stressful. So, I will think twice before I sign another Broadway contract. I really will.”
The play “Messy White Gays” has attracted not only stars like Lupone but also notable figures from the LGBTQ community and beyond.
Attendees have included Cheyenne Jackson, Jeff Hiller, Michael Urie, Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers, Chris Colfer, Todrick Hall, Bryan Safi, and even tech mogul Peter Thiel, who is referenced in the show.
Lupone’s representative did not respond to a request for comment.
