This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
The best-selling perfume of all time is none other than a timeless classic. A closer look at this iconic scent with a unique history.
There are scents so distinctive they are instantly recognizable. Olfactory signatures that have spanned decades, never fading or going out of style. This is certainly true for a perfume that stands as the ultimate symbol of French elegance. Created over a century ago, this revolutionary fragrance still tops global sales charts today. Dive into the history of an eternal trail that has remained unrivaled.
It all started in 1921 on the French Riviera, with a strong desire to shake up the traditional norms of that era’s perfume industry. Coco Chanel decided to create the first perfume for her brand after years of success in high fashion. Tired of the conventional scents that focused solely on a single flower like the rose or violet, she demanded a unique, feminine fragrance unlike any other. To achieve this, she enlisted the help of perfumer Ernest Beaux, who utilized natural ingredients as well as synthetic molecules: aldehydes. These added a unique dimension to perfumes, making them sparkling, metallic, and effervescent, and provided an incredible sillage. The perfumer crafted a blend of 80 different ingredients, a first for that time.
Among the various numbered samples presented to Coco Chanel, she chose the sample labeled number 5. This is how the legendary Chanel N°5 was born, which unknowingly pioneered modern perfumery by blending natural and artificial elements for the first time. It opens with lemony notes accompanied by neroli. The heart notes follow with jasmine, rose, and ylang-ylang. These give way to iris, vanilla, vetiver, and musk, creating a powdery and sensual effect.
Today, Chanel N°5 remains the most sold perfume of all time. Just like that. If this bottle is enshrined in the pantheon of beauty, it’s not just because of its fragrance, but due to its staggering statistics. It is estimated that a bottle is sold every 30 seconds globally, which amounts to about 10 million bottles a year. While Chanel keeps its sales figures confidential, N°5 is consistently mentioned as the best-selling perfume in history, generating billions of dollars in revenue since its inception.
What makes it even more exceptional are the icons who have embodied it over the years: from the legendary Marilyn Monroe (who reportedly slept wearing it), to Catherine Deneuve, Audrey Tautou, Gisele Bündchen, and even Lily-Rose Depp… This fragrance represents femininity, luxury, and complexity. “If this perfume were a fabric, it would be silk velvet. If it was a color, it would be a golden beige or a bright off-white,” Ernest Beaux once said. A scent that crosses generations without compromise, today, as in the past, the world continues to adorn itself with a few drops of Chanel N°5.
