The announcement regarding Jay-Z’s participation with The Roots at their upcoming two-day concert in Philadelphia introduced him as “JAŸ-Z and The Roots.” This new spelling has also been updated across various music platforms including Spotify and YouTube.
Behind the Name Change
The reason behind this stylization isn’t an homage to bands like Mötley Crüe, but rather it reconnects with Jay-Z’s own musical past. Close associates of the artist revealed that the umlaut was originally used in the artwork for his 1996 album, “Reasonable Doubt.” This year is notable as it marks the 30th anniversary of that pivotal album.
Jay-Z has shown a fondness for playing with punctuation in his name over the years. In 2013, he famously removed the hyphen from his name, only to reinstate it in 2017, capitalizing his entire name in the process. He also tweaked his name to JAY:Z for his “4:44” album, consistently keeping editors on their toes. The newly named “JAŸ-Z and The Roots” are set to be the main act at the Roots Picnic on May 30.
