Want to end your raclette evening with a sweet touch? Be careful, there’s one dessert that definitely doesn’t mix well with this comforting mountain dish – and it’s not what you might expect!

Winter heralds the return of comfort foods: fondue, tartiflette, and of course, raclette! Yet, after a parade of cheese slices, only a few daring foodies venture into the territory of dessert. However, they might want to steer clear of one particular choice if they care about their digestion…

Which Dessert Should You Absolutely Avoid After Raclette?

Cold cuts, potatoes, cheese: a delicious trio that has elevated raclette to the second favorite dish among the French, according to a 2023 CSA survey. Although it warms our evenings, this mountain specialty is nonetheless heavy to digest.

While raclette is usually satisfying on its own, some still manage to save a little room for dessert. Unbeknownst to them, they would do well to avoid finishing their meal with an ice cream! And more broadly, any frozen desserts made from sorbets or ice creams. It seems like a tempting option to refresh the palate after such a feast…

However, what they forget is that our stomachs don’t agree! The Marchand Brothers, Master Cheese Refiners, offer a simple explanation: the saturated fats in the raclette tend to solidify in response to the cold, forcing the body to work harder to digest them.

This is precisely what happens with ice creams, which promote the hardening of fats still present in the digestive tract. As a result, digestion becomes slower and more strenuous, potentially leading to a feeling of heaviness and even bloating.

What Dessert Should You Choose After Raclette?

If you want to finish your raclette party on a sweet and light note, opt for a vitamin-packed fruit salad. Favor mandarins, oranges, and kiwis, all in season.

Continuing with the fruity theme, consider poached pears. A simple and quick recipe that you can customize to your liking, perhaps flavoring it with vanilla or cinnamon… or drizzling it with a little chocolate!

To avoid weighing down your raclette evenings (and your digestion), steer clear of frozen desserts and entremets that put your stomach to the test!
