Christie’s has playfully dubbed the auction “groundbreaking,” a nod to a well-known quote from the film’s predecessor. The auction will feature a range of clothes and accessories from the popular sequel during an online event running from September 1 to September 15.
Highlight Costumes Up for Auction
Details are still emerging, but according to Vogue, the auction is set to include two standout outfits from the movie at an exclusive live event. One of the highlighted items is the Gabriela Hearst patchwork maxi dress worn by Anne Hathaway’s character, Andy Sachs, to a party at Miranda Priestly’s Hamptons home.
The retail version of this dress is currently available for pre-order at a price of $7,900. However, the auction piece isn’t just any dress—it comes with its own unique backstory, including a lunch stain from a memorable scene in the film, making it a unique collector’s item. It remains to be seen if this piece will be cleaned before auction as Christie’s representatives have not yet confirmed these details to Page Six Style.
Another notable item is the Dries van Noten tassel jacket, which was nearly cut from the film but was championed by costume designer Molly Rogers and actress Meryl Streep. Molly Rogers shared at a Fashionphile event that the jacket was so unique it needed just the right moment to shine in the film, emphasizing that the studio initially had reservations about its inclusion.
Additions to the Auction
The auction will also feature Emily’s Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti diamond and platinum Bone Cuff and a Schiaparelli blazer worn by Priestly. These pieces add to the allure of the event, showcasing a range of high-fashion items from the movie.
Christie’s notes that the auction will support the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). This charitable angle was spearheaded by Meryl Streep, continuing an initiative she began following the first film. The event will not only offer high-fashion pieces but also bespoke experiences related to the film, featuring costumes worn by lead characters and celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Simone Ashley.
The auction is set to launch online at Christies.com at 10am EST on September 1, offering fans and collectors a chance to own a piece of movie and fashion history.
