Michael Douglas’s Harrowing Oscars Experience

Michael Douglas unveiled a chilling incident in his latest memoir, which hit shelves on Tuesday, where he was informed by the FBI and LAPD at the Oscars about a “credible threat” to his life. The ceremony quickly turned into a high-security event due to the threat.

Douglas was told that an unidentified individual was at the prestigious event with intentions to “stab you with an HIV-infected needle,” according to his account.

Consequently, the glamorous event was discreetly filled with undercover agents mingling among the guests, tasked with safeguarding the renowned actor.

A Memoir Filled with Stunning Revelations

Douglas’s memoir, titled “One Helluva Ride,” which was previewed by Page Six Hollywood, is replete with startling stories. These range from his cocaine escapades with O.J. Simpson to clandestine romantic liaisons with Kathleen Turner and other high-profile celebrities.

The veteran Hollywood actor also shares a dramatic story from the 1992 Academy Awards.

The year following his Best Actor Oscar win for his role as the cutthroat financier Gordon Gekko in Oliver Stone‘s “Wall Street,” Douglas arrived at the event ready to present. Instead of being greeted by a valet when he stepped out of his limousine at the Shrine Auditorium, he was met by an FBI agent and an LAPD sergeant who briefed him on the “credible threat.” They detailed that someone planned to assault him with an HIV-infected needle that evening.

Douglas describes the era as the peak of the AIDS crisis, emphasizing the severity of such an attack. Many celebrities, including himself, wore red ribbons to spotlight the global AIDS battle.

The FBI’s response included deploying undercover agents throughout the venue, who even accompanied Douglas during a cigarette break outside. Despite his anxiety, Douglas proceeded to present Jodie Foster with the Best Actress award for “The Silence of the Lambs.”

“As I walked out, I quickly scanned the audience to ensure no one was approaching the stage. All I saw were the blinding stage lights,” he recounts the nerve-wracking moment in his book.

A close friend of Douglas confirmed the incident, expressing how frightening the situation was and admiring Douglas’s courage for proceeding with his presentation despite the risk.

Fortunately, the threat did not materialize, and the perpetrator was never caught.

Additional Life-Threatening Situations

The book doesn’t just stop with this incident. During his time on the ’70s TV series “The Streets of San Francisco,” Douglas found himself targeted by the Death Angels, a notorious group linked to the racially charged Zebra Murders, which claimed numerous lives in the early 1970s.

This alarming situation led to Douglas wearing a bulletproof vest beneath his costume and being constantly surrounded by undercover officers while on set.

In “One Helluva Ride,” a memoir spanning over 500 pages, Douglas delves deeply into his life. He discusses his relationship with his famous father, Kirk, his numerous romantic encounters, and gives an insider look at his major film projects like “Fatal Attraction” and “Basic Instinct.”

A week prior to the book’s release, Page Six disclosed Douglas’s hidden relationship with his “Romancing the Stone” co-star Turner, a secret kept for forty years.
