The 70-year-old matriarch made a dramatic entrance at the Season 2 premiere of All’s Fair in Rome on Saturday, draped in a velvet scorpion cape that once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor.
Viewers had already caught a peek of the garment on Kim Kardashian in the show’s new trailer earlier this month. After the premiere, Kim took to her Instagram Stories to explain the cape’s backstory.
She revealed that the piece is part of her mother’s collection and that Jenner had generously allowed her to wear it for All’s Fair. Kim added that when producer Ryan Murphy learned the cape had been worn by Taylor at Princess Grace’s Scorpion Ball, he wrote an episode in which her character, Allura Grant, hosts her own Scorpion Ball. Kim, 46, said she felt lucky to have borrowed it from her mom; the Hulu legal drama returns Nov. 4.
According to a press release shared with Page Six Style, Jenner acquired the cape at auction. The garment last appeared on the public market in 2011 at Christie’s, where it sold for $74,500 as part of Taylor’s personal collection.
For the red carpet, Jenner paired the historic cape with white gloves tucked beneath long white cuffs, and accessorized with a diamond lariat necklace composed of numerous pear-shaped stones and diamond shooting-star earrings.
The cape was created by Roman couture house Tiziani and is lined in ivory silk, decorated with embroidered diamanté scorpions. Taylor famously wore it to Princess Grace’s 40th birthday celebration in Monaco in 1969 — a party themed around the Scorpio zodiac sign. Jenner, who turns 71 on Nov. 5, shares that sign.
When Taylor wore the custom piece, she also sported the 69.42-carat Taylor-Burton Diamond, a gift from then-husband Richard Burton that same year.
Kim’s trailer nods to that glamorous pairing: she appears in the cape alongside more than $2.7 million worth of Leviev diamonds. The archival treasure also makes an appearance on Sarah Paulson’s character, Carrington Lane.
Clearly, in the Kardashian-Jenner family, vintage Hollywood couture is something to be shared.
