This Korean ingredient can hold up to 500 times its weight in water, making it a powerful ally—especially against dehydration-related fine lines.

The beauty world never stops throwing surprises our way. Between hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamin C, we thought we’d gotten to know most active ingredients—until a new contender arrived. It’s a fungus from Asia that has long been used in desserts and health preparations. Over time, researchers discovered that this mushroom is loaded with polysaccharides—long sugar chains that are particularly effective at trapping water. That should give you an idea of why it’s getting attention in skincare.
Known in traditional Chinese medicine and historical texts, the snow mushroom (Tremella fuciformis) has been linked to longevity and to helping the body maintain its water balance. When adapted for cosmetic use, it serves as a hydrating agent and can retain as much as 500 times its own weight in water. Functionally, it resembles hyaluronic acid, which can hold roughly 1,000 times its weight in water. As Audrey Faure-Grousson, PharmD and ingredient specialist at Erborian, explains, the two differ in molecular arrangement: both are polysaccharides, but hyaluronic acid forms long, linear chains while the snow mushroom’s polysaccharides branch off in multiple directions. Because of that structural difference, they attract and lock in moisture in slightly different ways—making them complementary when used together.

Erborian, a brand that blends traditional Korean ingredients with modern innovation, has incorporated snow mushroom into its hydration line, and the outcomes appear notable. According to the brand’s expert, after about a month of regular use skin looks plumper and dehydration fine lines are visibly reduced. Beyond smoothing those lines, the added hydration contributes to an overall improvement in skin quality and radiance.
Although snow mushroom isn’t positioned as a standalone anti‑aging miracle, it’s suitable for all skin types and works well as an adjunct in a more comprehensive anti-wrinkle routine. It doesn’t replace targeted anti-aging treatments, but it provides the essential hydration cushion that helps skin stay supple and better resist the visible effects of aging.
In an interview with Allure, dermatologist Dr. Hadley King also noted that the snow mushroom contains fatty acids that help strengthen the skin’s barrier. She added that mushrooms, in general, are a source of vitamins A, C, and D, and possess antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties. In short, this long‑standing ingredient from Chinese medicine may be one of the more understated tools for giving skin a refreshed, healthier appearance.
