Lymphatic drainage has been getting a lot of attention in recent years. What is it exactly? It’s a gentle type of massage with many advantages for the body. Its main purpose is to encourage the flow of lymph — a clear fluid that naturally circulates through the body carrying waste, toxins, and immune cells. By promoting lymph circulation, drainage supports detoxification, strengthens immune response, and delivers more oxygen and nutrients to tissues. That can smooth skin texture and lessen the appearance of water-retention cellulite. The slow, repetitive strokes also help lower stress levels. Beyond that, they can reduce swelling in the legs and abdomen and improve digestive function. The belly looks flatter and the heavy, sluggish feeling after meals is noticeably eased.

Professionals typically advise doing a course of treatments (around ten lymphatic drainage sessions spread over several weeks), followed by maintenance sessions once a month. Of course, not everyone has the time or budget for that. To relieve the tummy, there’s a do-it-yourself massage you can perform from bed to enjoy many of the same benefits without the cost. Demonstrated on social media by Tehani Leprieur, founder of Atelier Drainage Lymphatique in Paris, the routine consists of three very simple steps. Lying down with the knees bent, the practitioner first applies oil to the area to be massaged. She then performs “pump” motions over the lymph nodes in the groin to stimulate them. Using the pads of her fingers, she traces clockwise circles on the abdomen. Finally, she smooths the belly downward to help evacuate trapped air and waste.

In the caption of her post, Tehani Leprieur stresses how important it is to do this ritual while lying flat. “Forget quick massages in front of the mirror. For your self-massage to be effective, there’s one golden rule: lie down!” she writes. According to the expert, when you’re horizontal abdominal pressure drops, internal organs relax and the diaphragm can move more freely, making all of the massage movements much more effective.

When done regularly, this simple routine can significantly reduce bloating and help you maintain a flatter stomach day to day. It’s a great way to ease digestive discomfort and see real results without spending a dime.
