What if a yoga pose could take the place of crunches? Let’s explore!

Imagine this: rock-solid abs without endless crunches and sit-ups! Experts agree that while yoga may look gentle, it can significantly help in achieving a toned and flat stomach, especially through one specific pose. The key is to perform it correctly and hold it long enough. By maintaining this “V” shaped balance on your buttocks, you engage the deep core muscles far more effectively than with numerous traditional sit-ups. But there’s more: this static pose also holds another superpower. By requiring you to focus on your breathing during exertion, it directly impacts your nervous system and reduces your cortisol levels, the stress hormone. This offers a dual benefit for both body and mind.

A study by Auburn University in Alabama, USA, found that the pose known as navasana or boat pose, is one of the most effective for strengthening the deep abdominal muscles. “Renowned yoga instructor Sharath Jois, one of the most influential in the world, once stated that maintaining this posture for 25 breaths (spread over sets of five breaths with rest in between) could match the effects of 100 traditional crunches,” as reported by the Indian edition of Vogue.

The boat pose goes a step further by also engaging the hip flexors, glutes, pelvic muscles, and back, providing a truly comprehensive body workout. It has another advantage: in addition to strengthening the core, the boat pose may also help in burning abdominal fat. Truly a gem of a workout!

To properly perform the navasana, simply balance on your buttocks with your legs and arms extended forward at shoulder height. Keep your chest projected forward, your back straight, and your shoulders relaxed. Rounding your spine can cause lower back pain. There’s no need to lower your legs too much. For the movement to be effective, focus on stability and good breathing rather than performance. For an easier version, you can also bend your knees. Now, give it a try!
