The “MAGA Victory” rally, which took place at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, on the night before his presidential inauguration, wrapped up with a performance by the 1970s disco icons, the Village People. The group’s name is a nod to Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, an area known for its historical significance in the gay civil rights movement.
The event occurred on Sunday, with the band greeting the future 47th president of the United States with handshakes before their performance.
Unexpected Performance by The Village People
As the band kicked off their 1978 hit “YMCA,” 78-year-old Trump enthusiastically clapped and danced along to the tune.
The Village People’s participation was quite unexpected, especially considering their previous cease-and-desist letter sent to Trump in 2023. The letter was in response to the unauthorized use of their song “Macho Man” at an event at Mar-a-Lago.
Moreover, the group had openly supported the Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, during the election.
Victor Willis, the sole original member remaining in the group, took to Facebook earlier in the month to explain why they decided to perform at Trump’s event.
Music Beyond Politics
In his post, Willis expressed, “We know this won’t [sic] make some of you happy to hear; however, we believe that music should transcend politics.”
“Our song ‘YMCA’ is a worldwide anthem meant to unite people, especially after a polarizing and divisive election campaign where our preferred candidate did not win,” he elaborated, referencing their support for Harris. “That’s why we think it’s time to unify the country through music, which is why the Village People will be performing at various events during the 2025 inauguration of Donald J. Trump.”
The rally also saw appearances from Trump’s sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, as well as notable figures like Elon Musk and his son X-Æ-12, affectionately known as X.
