Ever since the release of Nosferatu, speculation about Robert Eggers’ next project has been buzzing across the film industry. While his werewolf film Werwulf has just been confirmed, the big news is that he’s also been tapped to direct a long-awaited sequel to a cult classic that has been 40 years in the making.

Eggers, known for his mastery of eerie atmospheres and unique storytelling, has garnered widespread attention with films like The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman. His recent work on the Nosferatu remake has only cemented his status as a modern horror visionary, earning him four Oscar nominations. But what’s next for this filmmaker, who seems to thrive on reinvention?
A New Chapter: From Vampires to Werewolves
As of late, many were expecting Eggers to continue with his vampire saga or perhaps focus on his project Werwulf, a werewolf movie confirmed for release in December 2026. But in a surprising twist, it was recently confirmed that Eggers will be stepping into the world of puppets, goblins, and 80s nostalgia—specifically, the world of Labyrinth.
Yes, the very same Labyrinth that Jim Henson brought to life in 1986, starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, is about to get a reboot from Eggers. The film, which initially flopped at the box office, has since gained a cult following, with fans repeatedly revisiting the strange world of the goblin king and his mystical labyrinth.

A “Labyrinth” Reimagined
The original Labyrinth told the story of Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), a teenage girl on a quest to rescue her baby brother from the clutches of Jareth, the goblin king, played by Bowie. It was a fantastical film filled with creatures, challenges, and the kind of quirky puppetry that Henson was famous for. While the film didn’t do well at the time, it gradually achieved iconic status—and now, Eggers is tasked with bringing this bizarre world back to life.
Scott Derrickson, the director of Sinister and The Black Phone, was originally slated to direct the Labyrinth sequel, but he ultimately stepped down, citing the difficulty of the project. Enter Eggers, whose unique approach to dark fantasy is seen as a perfect fit for this follow-up.
What’s Next for the Goblins?
Will Eggers take this opportunity to darken the tone of the original? Given his previous work—particularly Nosferatu, where a similar theme of supernatural control plays a role—it’s likely we’ll see a gothic reimagining of the Labyrinth world. As of now, it’s still unclear whether Jennifer Connelly will reprise her role as Sarah Williams, but the project is in good hands with Eggers.
Additionally, Variety has reported that Chris Columbus (director of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) and Eleanor Columbus, along with Lisa Henson (Jim Henson’s daughter and CEO of The Jim Henson Company), will also be involved in the project. With this powerhouse team on board, it’s safe to say fans of the original Labyrinth will be in for a wild, mysterious ride.

The Future of Robert Eggers’ Vision
While Eggers’ involvement with the Labyrinth sequel has certainly made waves, it’s worth noting that he still has multiple projects in the works. As he mentioned in an interview with Indiewire in December 2024, it’s important for directors to juggle several projects at once, as you never know which one will gain traction.
His diverse slate includes the medieval film The Knight, a mini-series about the infamous Rasputin, and now, the possibility of Labyrinth. But with Nosferatu and Werwulf already in the pipeline, it’s clear that Eggers is more than just a one-trick pony in the world of horror and fantasy.
If the Labyrinth reboot lives up to the high expectations set by the original, Eggers may very well have another legendary film on his hands.
