Tim Matheson, famed for his role in “Animal House,” is a big fan of nonfiction, particularly stories about Hollywood’s history.
“I’m drawn to real-life characters, historical events, and the resilience people show in facing challenges,” the “Virgin River” star shared with Page Six.
“This interest probably stems from my background in acting and directing, where understanding the truth of a character or setting is crucial,” he added. “Moreover, I’m fascinated by the early figures of the film industry, which I embraced as a young man and which, in turn, embraced me, becoming like a family,” he remarked.
In his memoir, “Damn Glad to Meet You,” released in November, Matheson recounts nearly seven decades in Hollywood. He delves into behind-the-scenes tales from “Animal House,” wild stories from his 33rd birthday, and his roles as charming doctors on “Hart of Dixie” and “Virgin River.”
“Barry Sonnenfeld, Call Your Mother” by Barry Sonnenfeld
“An entertaining glimpse into Barry’s evolution from cinematographer to director, his overbearing mother, a rogue uncle, and his pivotal early friendship with the Coen Brothers, starting with ‘Blood Simple.’ It’s a mix of humor, irony, and poignancy.”
“Damn Glad to Meet You: My Seven Decades In The Hollywood Trenches” by Tim Matheson
“This memoir explores my journey from child actor to seasoned professional, confronting setbacks, aging, and Hollywood’s restrictive typecasting. It includes ‘Film School Boot Camp’ anecdotes, offering directors and actors insights not typically taught in film schools.”
“I share personal encounters with icons like Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, and Clint Eastwood. This book is a reflection on my errors and the wisdom gained, shaping me into a better actor, man, and father,” Matheson explains.
“The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood” by Sam Wasson
“Wasson offers an in-depth look at the creation of ‘Chinatown,’ focusing on Roman Polanski’s personal tragedies, the production hurdles at Paramount, and Jack Nicholson’s career-defining performance.”
“Print the Legend: The Life and Times of John Ford” by Scott Eyman
“Eyman chronicles the career of John Ford, an iconic director known for classics like ‘The Searchers’ and ‘The Grapes of Wrath.’ Ford’s work earned him six Oscars and he directed ten actors to Oscar-nominated performances.”
“The book offers a vivid portrayal of the golden age of Hollywood and the creative ways directors navigated studio constraints,” Eyman notes.
“Over the Influence: A Memoir” by Joanna “JoJo” Levesque
“JoJo’s journey from teenage pop sensation to triumphant Grammy winner, despite a grueling legal battle with her record label, is both inspiring and enlightening.”
“Having directed her in ‘True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet,’ I was impressed by her immense talent and resilience. This memoir details her fight for a dream she’s cherished since childhood,” Matheson reflects.
“Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years and The War Years” by Carl Sandburg
“Sandburg’s comprehensive biography captures the essence of Lincoln, from his early years to his presidency during the Civil War. It explores his compassion and leadership during one of America’s most turbulent times.”
“Lincoln’s legacy as a leader of profound empathy and resolve is beautifully detailed in this work, reminding us of his crucial role in shaping our nation,” Matheson concludes.
