Authored by cultural critic Jeff Weiss, “Waiting for Britney Spears: A True Story, Allegedly” delves into the iconic pop star’s meteoric rise and her subsequent dramatic decline. Published by MCD Books, this narrative adopts a gonzo journalism approach, reminiscent of Hunter S. Thompson’s groundbreaking work in the 1970s.
As a former tabloid journalist from Los Angeles, Weiss closely followed Spears during her peak in the mid-2000s. His book, described as a frenzied portrayal, spans across 400 pages, tracing Spears from her days in Las Vegas nightclubs to high-speed pursuits in Malibu, from short-lived marriages to intense legal struggles, culminating in her notorious 2007 VMA performance.
A Unique Take on Fame and Downfall
Labeled as “a roaring Künstlerroman of celebrity, obsession, morality, and the last great pop star,” the biography is scheduled for release on June 10. Weiss also penned an extensive piece on Spears’ 2000 hit album “Oops! … I Did It Again” for The Ringer in 2020, celebrating its 20th anniversary and analyzing its impact.
The launch of “Waiting for Britney Spears” follows the success of Spears’ own memoir, “The Woman in Me,” which quickly ascended to the top of the New York Times’ bestseller list nearly two years ago. Page Six described her 288-page memoir as a narrative of survival, portraying Spears as a resilient figure regaining her balance in a world she once ruled, following the end of her 13-year conservatorship.
In her memoir, Spears, at 43, shared insights into her tumultuous family dynamics, her illustrious music career, and her relationships with notable figures such as Justin Timberlake, Kevin Federline, and Sam Asghari.
In one of the more sensational revelations from her autobiography, Spears disclosed that she had an abortion during her relationship with Timberlake in the early 2000s and confessed to infidelity, which contributed to their well-documented split.
Adding to Spears’ ongoing influence in popular culture, “The Woman in Me” is currently being adapted into a film by Jon M. Chu, the director known for “Wicked.” According to sources cited by Page Six last year, Spears is expected to be involved in the production, although casting has not yet started.
