It seems that The Faculty, the 1998 alien invasion film starring Josh Hartnett and Elijah Wood, is making a return to the big screen—though it’s unclear if anyone actually asked for it. With Hollywood constantly looking to cash in on nostalgia, this reboot has raised more than a few eyebrows. While the original film holds a special place in the hearts of many ’90s kids, does it really need a remake?

The Aliens Are Back

According to Variety, The Faculty will be reimagined for a modern audience, which is often code for “a remake that we probably didn’t need.” The good news, if you can call it that, is that some of the original team will be involved. Miramax will return as the studio, and Robert Rodriguez, who directed the original, will serve as a producer.
There is a glimmer of hope, however, as the screenplay will be written by Drew Hancock, who garnered attention this year with his horror film Companion. Hancock’s success in the genre has earned him a place in the industry, so perhaps there’s a chance the reboot will bring something fresh to the table. Additionally, the production company BoulderLight—behind Companion and the unsettling Barbarian—is backing the project, which could add a bit of credibility to the remake.
A Baby of Scream
The Faculty was, in many ways, a child of Scream’s success. In the early ’90s, the original script for The Faculty was written by David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel, only to be rewritten by Kevin Williamson—the same mind behind Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Miramax, aiming to cash in on the wave of teen horror films, bought the script and quickly made it a reality.
The film was designed to hit the ground running with a premise that both felt familiar and unique: a group of high school students battling an alien invasion, all while aware of the typical horror tropes at play. One standout moment is when Elijah Wood’s character references Independence Day to explain the invasion, showing just how self-aware the film was.
Directed by Robert Rodriguez, fresh off the success of Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn, The Faculty was another hit for Miramax. It grossed over $60 million at the box office, a huge success for a movie with a modest budget of about $15 million. While The Faculty wasn’t a groundbreaking classic, it was certainly a fun ride that captured the spirit of the late ’90s teen horror scene.
Why a The Faculty Remake?

Now, in 2025, The Faculty joins the ever-growing list of reboots and remakes. It’s hardly a surprise, though—Hollywood is practically addicted to resurrecting old franchises. After all, we’ve seen everything from The Craft getting a 2020 reboot, to I Know What You Did Last Summer returning in 2021, and Scream 7 on the horizon in 2026. With reboots of Urban Legend, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, and a prequel for My Bloody Valentine already being discussed, it’s clear that nostalgia is in full force.
While it’s hard to blame studios for wanting to tap into the familiarity of established properties, The Faculty’s revival still feels a bit unnecessary. After all, the original film was already a bit of a cult classic due to its nostalgic, campy charm. Will a modern version capture that same essence, or will it fall victim to the same pitfalls that have plagued many other remakes?
It’s a question that fans will surely be asking as more details emerge about the project. Until then, we’ll be left wondering: Is this reboot a nostalgic trip worth taking, or just another cash grab riding on the coattails of a bygone era?
