The final episode of The White Lotus is almost here.
As Sunday night approaches, bringing with it the closure of Season 3, viewers are abuzz with speculation about potential plot twists—pondering which characters might perish and who could be responsible.
This season, set against the backdrop of Koh Samui in Thailand, has been rife with intrigue, featuring Russian criminals, potential embezzlement charges against the Ratliff family, and a fugitive murderer from a past season of Mike White’s acclaimed series.
While some, like the cherished spa owner Belinda (played by Natasha Rothwell) and hotel employee Mook (portrayed by K-pop icon Lisa), seem relatively harmless, others, such as a group of female friends, appear on the brink of violent breakdowns. There are also a few characters who seem decidedly menacing.
Viewers are aware that creator Mike White embeds significant details purposefully, so it’s no surprise that clues are woven into the costumes, meticulously selected by lead costume designer Alex Bovaird. Bovaird, who has been nominated for three Emmys for her work on the series, shared some insight with Page Six Style, noting, “We have a little bit of a rule … there are no jeans [and] not a lot of black,” and added, “[We] don’t really repeat clothes.”
This meticulous attention to detail makes the wardrobe choices all the more crucial for predicting the fate of the characters. Below, we delve into the potential hidden meanings behind the characters’ outfits.
Chelsea
Aimee Lou Wood’s portrayal of Chelsea has captured the hearts of “Sex Education” fans, positioning her as this season’s standout. Her vibrant, bohemian charm, paired with a wardrobe inspired by Brigitte Bardot and Kate Moss, contrasts sharply with her older, brooding boyfriend Rick (played by Walton Goggins).
However, Chelsea’s luck appears to be waning, having narrowly escaped death twice—once during a robbery and again from a snake bite. She ominously hints that bad things always come in threes.
Her signature accessory, a diamond-studded dog tag that reads “Stay Gold,” might be more than just fashionable. Priced at $5,101 from Luna Flo London, the necklace not only nods to the iconic line from “The Outsiders” but also references Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” casting a shadow over her otherwise sunny disposition.
The poem ominously suggests that nothing perfect can last, raising concerns about Chelsea’s survival in the series.
Rick
Walton Goggins’ character Rick, although initially seeming prone to violence, reveals a more complicated, wounded nature. Despite his aggressive encounters, including brandishing a gun at an older man, Rick ultimately chooses non-violence when confronting a suspected killer of his father.
His wardrobe, full of vintage Hawaiian shirts and tasteful jewelry, does little to portray him as a hardened criminal.
Chloe
Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon), the beautiful model and girlfriend of the wealthy and secretive Gary/Greg (Jon Gries), lives a seemingly glamorous life. Her luxurious attire, including a pink Jacquemus swimsuit and a vintage Versace dress, hints at her involvement in Gary/Greg’s murky affairs, especially considering he’s responsible for his late wife Tanya’s (Jennifer Coolidge) demise in Season 2.
Chloe’s simpler wardrobe elements, like a “Simpsons” necklace depicting Maggie Simpson, might be a subtle nod to the character’s potential dark side, reminiscent of the plot from the 1995 “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” episode of the series.
Lochlan
Lochlan, the youngest of the Ratliff family, portrayed by Sam Nivola, is depicted as a character torn between extremes. His journey from sexual explorations to spiritual quests reflects his struggle with identity, as do his varied sartorial choices.
His clothing, including a shirt that playfully hints at his sexual escapades, and a luxury watch symbolizing naïveté and privilege, paint a picture of a young man caught in a tumultuous coming-of-age.
Timothy and Victoria
Timothy (Jason Isaacs) and Victoria Ratliff (Parker Posey), with their overt displays of wealth and Southern charm, are memorable for their sophisticated yet troubled personas. Their coordinated Rolex watches suggest a deep, albeit complex, connection between them, overshadowing their conflicts over their son’s future and Timothy’s looming legal issues.
Saxon
Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), the elder Ratliff sibling, makes a bold statement with a $23,000 Hublot watch, symbolizing wealth and power. His later switch to a Rolex designed for scientists hints at a potential shift in his character, possibly influenced by Chelsea’s spiritual readings.
Sritala
Sritala (Lek Patravadi), owner of the White Lotus in Thailand, is adorned with extravagant jewelry, signaling her affluent status. Her choice of a highly ornamental watch over more traditional luxury brands speaks volumes about her flamboyant personality and possibly her role in the unfolding drama.
Fabian
Fabian (Christian Friedel), the hotel manager with musical aspirations, may seem unassuming in his uniform, but his expensive watch and luxury car suggest there’s more to him than meets the eye.
Jaclyn, Kate, and Laurie
The troubled trio of friends—Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan), Kate (Leslie Bibb), and Laurie (Carrie Coon)—are entangled with dubious Russians but are more likely to turn against each other than engage in violence. Their distinct fashion choices, from flashy designer outfits to practical resort wear, reveal their personal struggles and social dynamics.
Valentin
Valentin, the enigmatic Russian posing as a health coach, remains a person of interest. His standard uniform hides his deeper connections, hinted at by his choice of a classic Russian Vostok watch, possibly indicating his true loyalties.
