Many common household foods, typically found on family tables, are strongly advised against by veterinarians due to their potential to cause severe health issues, including acute conditions that may require emergency care.

Over the years, the dietary habits of dogs have changed, often influenced by human behaviors. Increasingly viewed as full-fledged family members, dogs are frequently included in mealtime interactions, often being given leftovers. While this practice may stem from kindness, it also poses risks. Many food items contain additives, flavors, spices, or excessive fats that are harmless to humans but can be harmful to pets. Animal health platforms like Pet MD frequently highlight these dangers.

The primary concern is the presence of certain seasonings such as garlic, onions, or black pepper, which are known to be toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Dr. Jerry Klein, Chief Veterinarian of the American Kennel Club, notes that these ingredients can damage a dog’s red blood cells and cause severe digestive disturbances. According to Pet MD, these spices are often found in a particularly controversial and beloved pet food item.

This item is meat, specifically sausage. Whether it’s lamb, pork, or beef, these meats not only contain excessive amounts of salt and fat for a canine’s body but also seasonings (like garlic or onions) that can lead to serious health issues. “Sausages can make your dog very sick and should never be shared with them,” emphasizes Pet MD. This warning applies to all variations, including grilled sausages, Vienna sausages, or scraps from the plate. Even those that seem less spicy or more “natural” are still not suitable for a dog’s dietary needs. The high fat content also increases the risk of pancreatitis, a particularly painful acute inflammation of the pancreas.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not always the most delicate breeds that are most at risk. Some dogs that appear very robust can develop severe intolerance simply because a seasoning or preservative in the product does not agree with their digestive system. In the most serious cases, symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual lethargy can occur. If these clinical signs are observed after a meal containing such products, specialists recommend promptly consulting a veterinarian.
