Beware of this scam that compromises your WhatsApp account security and could even lead to losing access to it.
Despite Meta’s rigorous efforts to shield its WhatsApp users from fraudulent messages and phishing attempts, cybercriminals continue to craft ingenious ways to ensnare us. Every week, more sophisticated scam tactics emerge, duping a vast number of individuals. The primary goal remains consistent: to harvest personal data from users and then extort money from them. And even the most cautious among us are not entirely immune.
A novel scam strategy, identified by the tech news outlet Bitdefender, is making its rounds in Europe, particularly affecting WhatsApp users in Poland, Romania, and Germany. However, it’s crucial to remain vigilant as these types of scams often spread globally. Therefore, if you receive any unusual messages on your account, even if they appear to come from someone you know, be wary. These hackers are exceptionally crafty.
Exercise extreme caution if you get a message asking you to vote for someone named “Adeline,” supposedly a friend’s daughter participating in some contest, or any other competition-related request. This message will include a link. Once you click on it, you will be asked to enter your phone number and then the code sent by WhatsApp. At this point, you are trapped! The scammers can then impersonate you to your contacts and potentially request money from them. What’s worse, once they have your phone number and WhatsApp security code, they can take over your account and lock you out.
To avoid falling victim to these traps, it’s critical never to share your WhatsApp verification code with anyone, always verify any requests for money with a direct phone call, and never click on links from unknown sources! It’s better to err on the side of caution, even when dealing with contacts who reach out via WhatsApp.
