At a time when Beijing is ramping up military drills and staging blockades around Taiwan, Donald Trump insists the threat of an invasion is off the table—at least while he occupies the Oval Office. The claim, he says, comes directly from Xi Jinping himself.

Trump’s Bold Assertion
Speaking on Fox News during a summit on the war in Ukraine, Trump drew a parallel between the conflict in Eastern Europe and the growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait. He told viewers that China’s president had personally assured him: “I will never do it as long as you are president.”
“I don’t believe it can happen while I’m here,” Trump added, before hedging: “We’ll see.”
His comments come as China has carried out increasingly aggressive military exercises and blockade simulations, sending waves of fighter jets and naval vessels near Taiwan.
Taiwan — Beijing’s Red Line
For Beijing, Taiwan is considered non-negotiable. The Chinese government sees the self-ruled island as part of its territory and has pledged to achieve “reunification”—by force if necessary. As CNN notes, Chinese officials often describe Taiwan as “the most important and sensitive issue” in U.S.-China relations.
Taiwan, for its part, rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims and continues to bolster ties with Western allies, especially the United States, which remains its most important backer despite not recognizing it as a sovereign state.
Taiwan Reacts Cautiously
Taiwan’s government has not officially responded to Trump’s remarks. But Wang Ting-yu, a senior lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, expressed gratitude for U.S. support while issuing a stark reminder.
“Taiwan is thankful to our number one ally,” he wrote on Facebook. “However… security cannot rest on the promises of our enemy, nor solely on the help of our friends. Strengthening our own defense capabilities is essential.”
A Fragile Balance
Trump’s statement highlights a delicate balance: while his personal diplomacy with Xi may reduce the likelihood of confrontation in the short term, Taiwan’s leaders know they cannot rely solely on assurances.
For now, China’s war games serve as both a warning and a rehearsal. Whether Trump’s presence in the White House is enough to keep Beijing’s ambitions in check remains an open—and deeply unsettling—question.
