Forget smartphones or electric cars—China’s latest retail innovation is a shopping mall dedicated entirely to robots. Opened in Beijing just days before the World Robot Conference and the first Humanoid Robot Games, the four-story complex is a bold statement of China’s ambition to dominate the global robotics market.

A National Strategy With Global Reach

The Chinese government has declared robotics a strategic priority, pouring billions into domestic companies to scale up production. At the forefront is Unitree Robotics, a fast-rising firm preparing for an IPO later this year. Known for its advanced industrial robots, Unitree has also launched a consumer-friendly humanoid, the R1—standing 1.2 meters tall, weighing 25 kilograms, and priced at around €5,000.

That price point is stunning. Similar humanoids from the U.S. or Japan can cost ten times more. It’s a familiar Chinese playbook: mass-produce, slash prices, and make once-luxury technologies affordable to millions of households.

From Robot Dogs to Learning Machines

Early breakthroughs included quadruped robots resembling mechanical dogs. But humanoid design posed bigger challenges—mainly stability. The latest models can now stand up after falling and recover balance when pushed.

Generative AI has supercharged their progress, allowing robots to learn from demonstrations, adapt to new situations, and multitask. Outfitted with cameras, microphones, and Wi-Fi, humanoids can see, hear, and interact with people in human-designed environments. Engineers are still working on smoother movement and longer battery life, but progress is accelerating rapidly.

Meeting Real-World Needs

The potential applications are enormous. With aging populations and labor shortages, humanoid robots could step in across industries. Already, they’re performing repetitive or dangerous tasks in factories and warehouses. Others are working in hospitality, cleaning services, restaurants, and healthcare, especially in elder care.

It’s not just China. In the U.S., Boston Dynamics, Figure AI, and Agility Robotics are collaborating with carmakers like Hyundai, BMW, and Mercedes to integrate humanoids into manufacturing. In Japan, Kawasaki has partnered with French researchers at the CNRS, while in France, Renault has invested in VendorCraft, a startup developing a humanoid named Calvin. Even Elon Musk is pushing ahead with Tesla’s Optimus, his own take on the humanoid future.

A Market Ready to Explode

Beijing’s new Robot Mall isn’t just a retail stunt—it’s a preview of what’s coming. By putting humanoids on display, letting consumers and businesses interact with them, and offering prices that undercut global rivals, China is positioning itself as the world’s showroom for robots.

If the smartphone revolution is any guide, the day may not be far off when a humanoid helper is as common in households as a washing machine or a vacuum cleaner. For now, the Robot Mall is making one thing clear: in the race to bring robots into everyday life, China wants to be first across the finish line.
