However, clicking on the top link can now be risky, according to Sophos, a cybersecurity firm.

Cybercriminals are now using a sophisticated technique known as “SEO poisoning.” By optimizing their search engine rankings, hackers can easily manipulate the search results to position their malicious sites on the first pages.

This was the case in Australia, warns the company, where many individuals searching for “Are Bengal Cats legal in Australia?” were directed to a fraudulent site offering a ZIP file download containing a program called GoogLoader, designed to steal personal information. “Victims are often encouraged to click on malicious adware or links disguised as legitimate marketing, or in this case, a legitimate Google search,” explains Sophos.

To avoid falling into such traps, it’s recommended to always check the URL of the site, even if it’s the first link on Google, and never to download files from an unfamiliar site. Cybercriminals are not likely to limit themselves to “Bengal cats” but might adapt their keywords based on current search trends and the interests of the local population or country. This threat is thus becoming risky no matter where one is located.
