The 2026 Met Gala celebrated the theme of “Costume Art,” yet it failed to impress a prominent costume designer.

Molly Rogers, the renowned costume designer known for her work on “Sex and the City” and its various sequels, as well as the “The Devil Wears Prada” films, voiced her thoughts during a panel at Fashionphile’s flagship store in New York. She shared intriguing anecdotes from her career and expressed her disapproval of those who attended the Jeff Bezos-sponsored event.
“I wouldn’t have attended,” Rogers stated firmly. “It disappoints me that others did. Meryl [Streep] didn’t go, and while some of our other cast members did, that was their choice.”
Notable attendees included Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, along with Streep’s daughters, Grace Gummer and Louisa Jacobson, who graced the red carpet on Monday night.
Rogers also highlighted a protester outside the event, saying, “I think the real artistry was with the guy protesting outside,” when asked about the evening’s “Fashion Is Art” theme.

During the panel, host Amy Odell pointed out that Rogers was referring to Chris Smalls, the leader of the Amazon Labor Union, who was arrested amid his protest at the base of the Met’s steps.
Rogers humorously critiqued the attire of Bezos’s partner, saying, “How did she manage to make Schiaparelli look so cheap?!”
Several Met Gala regulars opted out of this year’s event, including Zendaya, Bella Hadid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lady Gaga, and Emily Ratajkowski. In April, it was reported that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani would not attend, stating it was “against everything he stands for.”
Although Meryl Streep has never attended the Met Gala, she was featured on the May cover of Vogue — usually reserved for the event’s celebrity co-chairs — alongside Anna Wintour just before the theatrical release of “Devil Wears Prada 2.”
It was exclusively reported by Page Six that Sánchez and Bezos contributed a minimum of $10 million to sponsor the gala, earning them the title of honorary co-chairs.
Beyoncé, Venus Williams, and Nicole Kidman joined Wintour as co-hosts for this year’s gala.
The museum’s 2026 fashion benefit broke records by raising $42 million, surpassing the previous year’s $31 million. All proceeds are earmarked for the Anna Wintour Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
