Are your homemade cookies not lasting as long as you’d hope? They might do better in this spot than in your cookie jar…

Whenever you decide to bake a batch of cookies, even though you might be tempted to eat them all at once, you inevitably save some for later. After all, you wouldn’t don an apron and dirty mixing bowls, cookie cutters, and a rolling pin for just one snack, right? So, naturally, the issue of storage quickly arises.

In a perfect world, you’d want your cookies to taste just as delicious several days later as they did fresh out of the oven. Unfortunately, they don’t hold up well over time. Their texture soon changes—either they become too soft or they harden like rocks. Sometimes, their flavors even diminish or disappear entirely. And this happens even when you store them in an airtight container that’s sealed tightly.

To extend their shelf life, you’ve tried everything. This includes the old trick of adding an apple slice, hoping its moisture would keep your cookies softer. Effective? Too much so. After five days, they turned overly soft. Not to mention that they began to taste like the fruit itself. Gone was the delicate orange blossom flavor of your shortbread cookies… Similarly, the idea of storing them with a slice of bread didn’t pan out well either: your treats lost all their crunch and picked up yeast flavors. Not awful, but certainly not great.

Is there really a better way to keep homemade cookies fresh? After several experiments, Leah found a slight improvement by storing them in a zip-lock freezer bag. She particularly noted that “cookies stored this way had a slightly fresher taste and were a bit crunchier (in the case of shortbread) and softer (in the case of chocolate chip cookies)”.

While you shouldn’t expect a dramatic difference, the zip-lock bag does offer some clear benefits over traditional containers: it’s less bulky and easier to carry, and it allows you to squeeze out air as cookies are removed. This reduces moisture transfer from the outside, thereby better preserving the cookies’ texture and freshness. All that’s left to do is try it out (and enjoy a few bites) to see for yourself!
