An expert in training police dogs, this professional believes that certain dog breeds are not suitable for family life, including those imposing breeds “capable of killing an entire pack of wolves.”
Selecting a family dog often involves factors like affection or the pet’s looks. However, some impressive breeds may not be the best fit for living with children. Surprisingly, it’s not always the breeds labeled as dangerous under regulations such as pit bulls, American Staffordshire terriers, or rottweilers that pose challenges. Other, less commonly scrutinized breeds can be particularly demanding and difficult to handle on a daily basis.
This is what American dog trainer Garret Wing has to say, sharing his expertise on his YouTube channel that boasts over two million followers. With nearly two decades of professional experience, including training police dogs, he has insights that resonate widely. In one of his viral videos, he discusses certain breeds that are not suitable for most homes. He points out that three specific breeds should be avoided by families, mentioning one breed in particular that is “capable of killing an entire pack of wolves” due to its formidable strength.
The first breed he advises against is the Tibetan Mastiff. Native to the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, this large dog has historically been used to guard livestock and protect villages. Its size, strength, and protective instinct make it quite the imposing figure despite its teddy bear appearance! Garret Wing also notes that this breed is not easy to train and requires significant experience. “They are also known for being very stubborn and difficult to train. Beautiful animals, but probably not for you,” he explains.
Wing also mentions two other breeds that he considers unsuitable for family life. The first is the Great Dane. While these dogs are “lovable” and can make excellent pets, Garret states that they would completely alter your lifestyle. Their immense size necessitates significant adjustments in home organization and complicates daily management. Lastly, he talks about the Cane Corso, a powerful Italian breed…
However, these dogs are not inherently aggressive. Their behavior largely depends on their training, environment, and the experience of their owners. With proper training and experienced owners, they can become well-balanced companions. But for many families, he concludes, it’s better to opt for breeds that are easier to manage day-to-day.
