While petrol cars are hanging around for well over a decade, electric vehicles are speeding out of driveways almost as fast as they’re parked in them. A recent study has uncovered a surprising trend: EV owners are swapping their cars every few years—despite paying a premium upfront. So, what’s really going on behind this fast-paced turnover?

The rising age of petrol cars
In an age where car ownership isn’t just a necessity but, for many, a lifelong relationship, drivers of traditional combustion vehicles are clearly in it for the long haul. According to a major economic study conducted in the US—a country where the car is practically a family member—the average petrol car is now kept for 12.5 years. Personal vehicles, excluding fleet or utility models, stretch even longer, hitting an impressive average of 13.6 years.
That’s not just a blip. It’s the sixth straight year the average vehicle age has risen. And it’s not hard to see why: slowed production of new vehicles, delays in supply chains, and rising costs have encouraged drivers to hold on to what they’ve got. In 2022 alone, new car sales dropped by 8%, hitting the lowest point in over a decade with just under 14 million units sold.
Throw in a bit of post-pandemic caution, stubborn inflation, and economic jitters, and the trend toward car longevity makes perfect sense.
Electric vehicles: a faster revolving door
Now here’s the twist: while their petrol counterparts age gracefully in driveways, electric vehicles (EVs) are being replaced at a much brisker pace. On average, an EV changes hands every 3.6 years—nearly three times faster than the national average for all vehicles. So much for long-term commitment.
But this isn’t necessarily a sign of dissatisfaction. It has more to do with who’s buying them—and what’s driving their decisions.
EVs tend to attract a more affluent buyer, one who’s often more tech-savvy and eager to upgrade when the next best model lands on the market. With the electric car sector evolving at breakneck speed, new features—better battery life, faster charging, sleeker designs—are arriving year after year. It’s a bit like smartphones: once you’ve had the latest, it’s hard to go back.

A market in motion
Electric cars are also benefitting from an ongoing surge in innovation. From Tesla’s self-driving ambitions to BYD’s budget-friendly range, the market is buzzing. For many first-time EV buyers, switching to electric marks a permanent shift in preferences. Once converted, most drivers tend to stay loyal to zero-emission motoring, according to industry analysts.
Yet there’s another layer to the frequent turnover: the practicality gap. For all the convenience of charging at home and dodging the petrol station, range anxiety on longer journeys still pushes many households to hold onto at least one petrol-powered backup. Reliability over distance is still a key factor for cautious consumers.
Cost, confidence and the future
Let’s not forget the price tag. EVs are still generally more expensive to buy than their petrol cousins, and that price tends to draw in buyers who can afford to upgrade more often. This demographic isn’t just paying for function—they’re after cutting-edge tech, environmental credentials, and yes, a bit of status too.
So while petrol cars age quietly in garages, electric vehicles are getting the same treatment as trendy gadgets—used, admired, and then upgraded. But as the technology stabilises and second-hand EV markets grow, we may well see a shift toward longer ownership in years to come.
For now, though, it seems electric drivers are keeping things current—literally and figuratively.
